Calgary Electricity Scam
#1
I don't know if other provinces are also subject to this garbage but twice in the last year now we have had people knocking on our door trying to scam us to lock into 5 year plans to pay above market rates for electricity with huge penalties for cancelation.
Last night it was a scammer representing Alberta Energy Savings.
He did everything in his power to give the impression he worked for the provintial government "I am here from 'the' electricity company to ensure you are not being overcharged", complete with offical looking uniform and employee card etc.
He then outright lied and said that by signing the form I would be protected from price rises above 10.9 but would benefit from prices below that rate, but the contract actually stated that the price was FIXED at 10.9 for five years.
Oh yeah and he 'forgot' to mention that there was a $75 PER YEAR penalty if you cancel after figuring out you have been scammed.
By comparison ENMAX/EASYMAX will let you lock into a five year fixed rate at 8 with no penalty for breaking the deal as long as you give them 30 days notice.
Daylight robbery and fraud if you ask me. So if you have these guys trying to scam you tell them in no uncertain terms to buzz of!
For those in Alberta this is a good source of info on utility prices etc:

You have 48 hours to change your mind if you get conned into signing up with them or anything else sold door to door.
Don't under any circumstances allow them to see your current bill, all they want off that is your account number.

1 simple rule applies the same here in Canada as it did in the UK.............NEVER EVER BUY ANYTHING FROM DOOR TO DOOR SALESMEN

We had AES around on Wednesday as well. They tried to convince me that they were EnMax selling their EasyMax scheme even though he was wearing a coat which said "Alberta Energy Savings". Unlike EasyMax, AES's plans lock you in for a five year period at a fixed rate. Last time I checked, they were also the most expensive option in Calgary.
