WTF?

As a life long catholic I deeply resent that kind of bullsh!t!

It could just as easily be fathers - most sex abuse is by biological fathers and boyfriends.

Are you a male - then maybe by nature you are a pedophile?

Being English you're probably a foppish homosexual?

It seems to have struck a nerve. Id suggest you are a bit too sensitive to what was the kind of flippant throw away remark thats two a penny around here.

There was no immediate connection between the catholic jibe and sexual assaults, and no mention of pedophiles at all....you made that connection!

Take a joke as it was intended, or ignore it, but either way please chill.

OK it's flippant throwaway remarks that piss people off these days:

The connection was in the number of sexual abuse crimes in a quadrant of Calgary.

If I made a reference to someones' sexual orientation, skin colour, religion or ethnicity it would be a no-no. But this is a joke? It's not to me, it's an insult.

Like I said, you were the one who connected the dots in your own head?..You can infer whatever picture you want to see.

Nothing explicit was said about any of the particular crimes on offer on the map wrt the clergy, and indeed if I sort the map by sexual assault over 6 months (presumably what you are upset about) then the whole map is covered anyway

If no inference was to be drawn what was the point of the remark. The inference was intended by the poster. I found that inference off-pissing.

Having worked in prison with sex offenders, and having been a member of the clergy I know both sides of the story. That's why I do not find it funny. And it's not mention of the clergy that brings thoughts of pedophilia to mind, it's the juxtaposion of a list of crimes with the posters remarks about the clergy.

What are we supposed to thnk they did - car theft? Commercial robbery?

I just don't think I should have to keep quiet if I feel offended. I'm not telling others how to think - I'm relating how I feel.

No-one on here keeps quiet if a poster has said something stupid or wrong.

OK -

I'm not offended - it was a stupid remark and the poster is oviously an idiot. Is that better?.

WOW talk about an over reaction.

Seriously sorry you feel that way.

I find all kinds of things here "off pissing", but I take a deep breath and move on.

Maybe its a sad reflection on the churches current image that a random comment on catholic clergy and crime automatically has people thinking about paedophilia. Thats not the church I know

It's not an over reaction to me. My faith is part of my life, and the clergy play an important part in that life, I feel that I should at least rebut that kind of stupid remark. But now I feel I have to defend my right to react - that's where my "overreaction" is coming in.

Done with this thread.

Well, thats what I was thinking...

Round here mention of crime and the clergy is more lilkely to provoke long tales about financial "mismanagement" and dubious accounting practices in Grafton from my catholic wife.

Of course you have a right to rebut, although it would have been nice if it had been simply just a rubutal of the argument, rather than adding what seemed like a personal attack on the poster

I dont see anything worth deleting though, unless everything goes leaving just the first post, and I hate doing that as it just provokes more debate.

Lets all move on.

Wow - no crimes in Westgate at all in the last six months.

Makes me very glad that we weren't taken in by the locksmith's hard sell when he came out recently. He insisted that, despite a history of little crime in the area, there had been a recent wave of break-ins. Even when people were at home with the doors locked, they were not save, as burglars were beating them up in their own homes. My wife was alone when he called, and was rather rattled by his claims, especially when his parting shot was to tell her that would would probably be burgled very soon, because we had ignored his advice to buy very expensive commercial grade locks and new doors! I wonder how many vulnerable old ladies he has conned into spending far more than they can afford.:curse:
