is there much call for Cad designers in Canada, im in the intial stages of looking for work and wondered how the job market is for mechanical designers??

Snap! i'm in the same situation as you.

I've read that the markets are slowly picking up, but 2011 will be better still.

im working on heavy engineering (nuclear decomissioning at moment)

Its an employers market at the mo..but give it time should turn around.
but keep on it... employers are often looking for unique skill sets

The appetite for IT work still (in my opinion) remains in the big cities in Canada. Right now, the obstacles clearly point to the current recovering employment situation. Keep in mind, most people coming to Canada (especially from the UK and Europe), find that IT in certain areas, is still a little behind the times.
