Cable internet and TV question for the Techies
Guys
After finding out that Bell can only supply 512Kbps to our property, I've opted for Rogers Cable 6Mbps and the bare minimum cable TV package.
This is going to be fitted when we're still in the UK and our property developer is going to let the Rogers monkey in to work his magic.
I know NOTHING about cable TV so I'm told he'll leave a cable box and a TV remote in the Lounge. Do you know if I connect a TV via an S-Video cable to the receiver box? Just curious...
He's going to fit a cable modem in the office. Apparently, you can only fit a Rogers modem to the line...is that a load of old cobblers per chance?
Additionally, does anyone know if I can simply bang a wireless router into the cable modem via a length of UTP, to share out the connection.
Many thanks.
Little-Bster.
Ps. Rogers impose a 62GB monthly download limit now, to reign in all you p2p'ers

Interesting about the download limit (ours appears to be 20 gigs). What does it mean?

1. Walk to router vendor.
2. Purchase router.
3. Shut down all computers.
4. Disconnect power to modem.
5. Disconnect wire coming out of modem from computer, plug into router.
6. Run wire from router to original computer.
7. Go for a fag.
8. Plug in modem.
9. Plug in router.
10. Restart original computer.
11. Surf a little porn, just enough to be sure it works.
12. Plug wires from other computers into router ports.
13. Start other computers.
That's it. I expect it's similar with wireless but I haven't bothered with it.

It would work fine if both the computers were using reasonably recent versions of Windows. The pooters would "just know". As it is, one is using Millennium, the other '97. It can be worked around but the instructions were written by someone that doesn't like other people very much.

Re: Cable internet and TV question for the Techies
When I connected my brother's computer (about 3 years ago, Windows XP Pro) to a router and a Rogers Hi Speed modem It would always give me a DNS not found error. I got over that by connecting the computer directly to the modem, writing down the address for the DNS Server and making it the default DNS server for that computers network connection and finally hooking everything up again. Somehow when we connected his PS2 so he could play online it worked flawlessly without having to do any changes. Besides that everything worked great from the beginning and he is still using it without any problems.

If Souvenir wants to step away and enjoy some rent that's not a matter of concern to me but it would take longer than the modem needs to reset. (At least, I'd guess it'd take longer). I think it unlikely that he would, Mrs. Souvenir would likely not be pleased, but then who's to say, once one leaves for the colonies conventional mores really no longer apply.

Thanks guys.
Souvenir - the bandwidth limit theoretically means that your web connection will stop working or you'll get hit with charges if you touch the limit.
I think 62GB is quite generous though - even if you're a real bit-torrent\Kazaar fan (ie, you download some huge files..continuously).

Is that 62gb down, or up and down combined? Off to hurriedly check if Shaw's the same...
