Question Buying stuff on recce trip and bringing it over to the UK

Hi,

I'd like to ask whether it's ok to buy things in Canada, like iPad, and bring it over to the UK, do I have to declare it?? It's almost £200 cheaper to buy there and I'll be bringing it back to Canada anyway when we move for good. Wonder if anyone has an experience with this. It shouldn't be problem to have it unlocked to use it for UK networks for the time being, should it?

Any advice welcome. Thanks

You will have to declare it and pay duty on it as you are a UK resident

Does it make any difference that we are landing as PR?

Might be wiser to buy it after the move

The 64G iPad 2 costs $849.99 (538 pounds Sterling) at Best Buy Canada. Can they really be that much more expensive in the UK?

You should declare it for duty when you go back to the UK. Most wouldn't and most would likely get away with it. Do consider that if it goes wrong you will have a Canadian warranty rather than a UK one.

Well, that's the thing.. But buying it in the UK would mean that after moving for good to Canada I will have UK warranty. Although, I rather hope that apple offers international warranty. Just like my Toshiba laptop has.

Got our Ipad at Apple store in NYC last Xmas. Packed it carefully in luggage for flight home. Didn't declare it, no issues. Did need to get a power adaptor in UK so it would charge properly, cost about £17.
