Buying car from dealer - what does this mean?
I was having a look on the Wiki in the "Buying Car from a dealer" section, http://britishexpats.com/wiki/Car_Buying-Canada, and wondered exactly what does this mean?
The pros and cons of buying from a main dealer, a used car lot or privately are the same in Canada as they are in the UK. Watch out for the 30 second or 30 yards warranty from the less reputable used car lots. Once you pass either the car is yours.
What is the 30 Second or 30 yard thing all about? Sounds a bit scary like you would be locked into buying a car without your knowledge?

No - Its more that once you pay your money then you own it even if the arse falls out the engine as your driving out of the lot

IMHO look for a dealer that sells a specific brand of vehicle ie Ford GM Toyota etc as opposed to a Steves used autos with no allegiance to a specific manufacturer.
The big dealers need to keep their reputation intact and most offer at least a minimum warranty when purchasing used.
Depending which Province you are in private sellers should have the vehicle safetied before you buy its like an MOT.
Most major dealers have various selections on their lots and check out auto trader.ca for searching around.

Nothing wrong with the well established lots that sell a variety of brands. Mostly they are picking them up off lease or ex daily rental anyway and they are newer vehicles with the balance of the manufacturers warranty anyway. Most after market warranties are written in legaleese, with numerous loopholes, and frankly they are probably not worth what they cost.
All dealers live and die by their reputations. Talk to the people around you and find out who they have had good experiences with, thats usually the best guide if not taking a chance on buying privately. IMO the vast majority of private sellers are perfectly legit above board people anyway, its the ones with half a dozen vehicles for sale who are not being up front about doing it as a business that I would be especially wary about.
And as always, regardless of who you buy from, buyer beware applies, so its a good idea to have any vehicle checked out independently before committing. Once again, ask around for local recommendations of trusted / cheap mechanics to do that for you.
