OK....so how about Orangeville travelling on highway 10 from Pearson Airport? Bearing in mind hubbie will be travelling offpeak (shifts). He is happy for a longer commute by my concern is the winter months and there being a higher risk of an accident.
We'll be living there a year or so before we decide to buy so can check it all out, but just researching at the moment to make the most of our time.
TIA

I've been told that off peak it's 40 minutes to the airport. As you know my hubby works shifts at Pearson too.

Maybe you could share your thoughts on the travel time/commute. TIA

We've been looking in to Orangeville for a while. It's a small community so a very different experience to living in Burlington/Oakville... But to us that's the appeal. We've always lived in semi rural areas and believe it would be a good fit. Everything is there for every day life though. Cinemas, big box stores etc...
Let me know if you want anything "checking out"

Shall do. The first part is easy as it's straight down Hwy 10. But haven't figured out yet when is the best time to go east.

We seem to be drawn to Glen Abbey area in Oakville but we are aware we can get more house for our money further out so we're trying to weigh up what is more important.
All the best with your search

That's very kind of you thank you. I'm not sure there is anything we can check out it yet LOL We are looking to live in an area that is family friendly, lots of places to cycle, walk etc kids can play with their friends in the neighbourhood.

I commuted from north of Shelburne to Toronto for several years. Coming home the bad weather started at Orangeville (though the rule of thumb is that south of highway 89 is balmy). Orangeville to the airport off peak should be no trouble except in fog but every commute is dangerous in fog.
I usually took highway 10 but, if driving in daylight, any of the parallel streets to the east, such as Kennedy, offers a scenic up and down drive through horse country. Be aware that on highway 10 the stretch just north of the 410 is heavily policed, you want to go at a strict 62mph.
Orangeville is the nearest place to here with a good range of shops and it has the Coriander Kitchen so I'm there often. AMA.

We went to three open houses today. There was one we really liked. It needed work but that's fun!
Still waiting on houses to sell in NS but we're getting closer to that happening!!
So dbd when you head towards the airport when do you go east? Can't figure out what's the best way to go other than down to the 401 but that seems to be a long way round.

Whereabouts was the house you liked?
I'm up for meeting but I'm afraid my favourite pub in Orangeville, the Deck, has transformed into a West Indian restaurant. Good roti but it's not the same.

I often took 9 to 50 and down on the 427. I was going to Toronto and wanted to avoid the 15 lane left shift from the 401 to the 427 but it'd be an option for the airport too. Not in spring though, there's an area of turtles crossing the road near Palgrave and you either have to slow or splat.

We're looking in town. Just a quiet part of town with easy access to the pub! It's about time that youngest son lived in a community where he can just jump on his bike to visit friends instead of being isolated.
What's the Tipsy Toad like? Think we went there during the jazz festival but it was so busy we couldn't decide.

Going along Hwy 9 to Hwy 50 and down would take more than 40 minutes I would have thought?

I know some people who live just south of Broadway, on one of the York streets, that's a nice area with a mixture of big old houses and 1950s ones it's close to pubs but the houses have sensible lots. I suppose everywhere within easy walk of the farmer's market is nice while Purple Hill is very nice. The hellish bits are east of 10, south of 9; a project visible for miles and south of 9 as you go out of town to the west, a sea of greige plastic where once there was a amazing historic barn. There's a nice dog park behind the rundown mall but don't go into any of the side streets as it's featureless subdivision hell; you'll need a trail of breadcrumbs to get out again.
I haven't been into the Toad since it was renamed, before that it was a generic "British" place, like one of the Firkin chain; poor quality food and uninteresting beers. I don't suppose it's much changed. The Mill Creek pub is better. The place next to the Bell shop which until recently was called "Up Yer Kilt!" (I kid you not), is to be avoided.
