I suspect ANYWHERE in Canada has a bug problem (usually blackfly) at certain times of year so NS will be no exception. Except the North Shore of course. No bugs there in paradise.;)

More seriously, doubtless on of the Nova Scotians will be along momentarily to reassure / worry you with actual bug related data for NS.

Yep....they're called that because they are big enough to RIDE a horse.........TRUE !:p
Honestly , we moved house (and it was a gorgeous property ) because the amount of mosquitos was unbearable . Cutting the grass with the 4' ride-on mower was an ordeal........so check out the area for bugs before purchasing !!!!:o

Re: bugs

i was outside in the evening a lot last year during the summer as most of the footy is played then. our particular pitch is right next to some open ditches with still water in them, not exactly old trafford. not a problem with any kind of mossie or other fly. seems in can alter dramatically just within your province let alone canada.

I'd like to take this opportunity to gloat...

Bugs are a non issue in Victoria... mosquitos/blackflies exists but sucked out to sea in the off shore breezes... more inland you go there will be some but in the city... nadda... very rare... not a thing we think about.

but then... I've got that rare chemical makeup that repells mosquitos anyway... they fly by, hover and move on... sort of like men.

Mosquito's would be the major bothersome insect in Calgary and southern Alberta, black flies not an issue, I'm not sure I would even recognise a black fly there are so few of them.

Similar here on the Rock. We get some in late May/Early June but generally it's windy enough to keep them away.

We found out last year on our Africa trip that Mrs AX is very attractive to mosquitos, so much so in fact, that they left me alone!;)

Must admit that myself and Mr Y got bitten quite a few times last year by blackfly and mozzies. Kids were okay though. The bites gave us very itchy wheals and it was disgusting when bitten on the scalp

This year I will be more vigilent with the bug spray.

Top tip - never do the gardening, sit out, or go for a romantic evening stroll without wearing any of these attractive garments

A lot of places in Canada have this problem - it's not confined to NS.
Swarms of black flies appear in the humid summer months in parts of Ontario; mosquitoes are a nuisance, again in the high humidity. I find taking antihistamine for a few days before the onset of hot humid weather helps. They'll still bite but the itch/scratch shouldn't be as bad.

True enough. But the GTA, even the northern suburbs such as Richmond Hill, don't really have a problem at all. Sometimes a few mozzies, but citronella with a bit of OFF seems to work OK . No blackflies at all. Sometimes wasps/yellowjackets etc but they're not really a bother 99% of the time.

Does the smog kill 'em off ?

Re: bugs

My uncle lives in halifax NS, and plays a lot of golf. He says they have a local rule that you are allowed to pick the ball up and wipe the bugs off, as it becomes black with them.

You apparently have to be very careful not inhale them as well.

I don't know what sort of bugs he was referring to .... I think he said they were midgies, but I guess they could be mosquitoes or black-flies?

Here in Alberta, maybe in the woods particularly, there is a small fly called a no-see-um (seriously!!) which is apparently a flying mouth!!

I've never seen one (haha!) :p

You don't need all these toxic chemicals like DEET to keep bugs away. Just smoke heavily. It works for me.

:lol::lol: Me too, works well. Works on people too!

Talking of bugs, the ants are pretty ginormous here too. Plus we were warned that orange ladybirds sting or bite, but the red ones don't.

On the other hand, I saw my first firefly dance here.... beautiful!

If they look like this:

..and they live in your yard, they could be eating your house...

Vicious house-eating Carpenter ants.

Re: bugs

Was feeling itchy enough before that pic was posted now can't stop scratching!!!!!!

I am a mozzie magnet, still remember being bitten by one even though I had just covered myself head to toe in deep woods off and was just leaving my house. Walking down the path to the car and a mozzie landed on me and started feasting!

Was playing frisbee whilest waiting for the Canada Day fireworks last year on a hill over looking downtown Calgary. I spent more time swatting mozzies than playing and was covered in bites! Somehow got one on my butt even though I was wearing jeans! The bites here are much worse than the ones I used to get in the UK and I have to resort to antihistamines just to take the edge off the itch
