But the OP mentioned that they were considering working in a bar in Halifax?? as a stop gap and typically they are minimum wage jobs......... also important to know that NS does not reduce the minimum wage for liquor servers like they do in most of US and the busier provinces in Canada..... :)

My OH and I both found work outside Halifax within 2 weeks of landing. (We are in Bridgewater.) Neither job is "what we do" and both are just above minimum wage.

His job is just in a call centre and was advertised. He won't stay there forever but it will do for now. Mine is in the local bank - I asked the banker who opened my account, but it was an advertised position and open competition. It is a contract and part time so I will need to find something else. I'm also waiting for the outcome of an interview - I don't think I got the job but I am pleased I was given an interview, again in open competition and an advertised post.

I'm not in a rush at the moment, as the kids are off school so childcare pretty much wipes out my wage, but I'm just happy to be working and getting some Canadian work on my resume. I'm also meeting a lot of people in the process. I did apply for some other advertised roles (why pass up a chance) but no response. Once summer is over, I'll be doing the rounds and handing in resumes anywhere I can.

There are a lot fewer internet/newspaper advertised jobs outside Halifax - but a lot of jobs are locally advertised (like in shop windows) so it is easier once you are here. These are not "chairman of the board" jobs so I guess if you are that level or in a specialised field then it might not work for you and the city would be better.

For us, we enjoy life here and work is secondary. I will no doubt feel differently when the savings run out and may have to take the long commute to Halifax if I cannot find more suitable work locally. If career is important, then it will be harder outside Halifax as people tend to stay in jobs once they get them.

At the moment, I am happy with what I have - I walk to work and I am close by for the kids and that is important to me right now.

We are in Yarmouth. Never expected to live this far away from Halifax to be honest but it's ok here. We both have good jobs and the kids are happy... Will we stay here forever? Probably not.... ;)

I think if I had all that, I would stay!

Especially if the ferry does come back. ;)

Haha... Any day they will be announcing it... It would certainly build confidence in the area...
