Brits in Nova Scotia?!

Hey guys!
I am about to move to Halifax to be with my fiance. Now no quips about moving there, most people ask why I am choosing to move there, obviously it is because I very much want my future husband to spend time near his friends and family before we up stick and move to UK permanently.

I have visited for a few months at a time over the last couple of years, and never come across a Brit! Anyone there? I don't mind if there isn't, just intrigued. I am praying I get some work, as work is very limited there - I may have to try and hit up a bar for the time being... they are very friendly in that city and love the accent!

If anyone has any info let me know!!!
Thanks :)

There's loads of them, as evidenced by the number of forum members that live there. Pop to Fall River if you can't find one, you'll be tripping over them there. ;)

Best of luck with the move and welcome.

Unless you have a visa allowing you to work, you cannot work.

Hi Fran

I have a lovely client, Brit who spends summers in NS. She is in her 60's so she may not be a buddy for dinner parties and gym visits, but she's a v nice person. I can introduce you if you wanted a little chat, gen comments. Don't worry if the pensioner angle puts you off ! :) Fair enough
<snip>
Not sure if they notify me of posts on this site:cool:

I have a work visa, fear not! We have spent 18 months getting to this stage and well aware of all the processes, excited!!

Barely a day goes by where I dont hear another British accent. There are a lot of expats in NS- to be honest, I'm not sure why Canadians havent raised it as an issue.:)

I think I've only heard 1 or 2 British accents since getting here 2 months ago.. but I don't think there are that many living in this area either...

izzi81,

Is it easy to find work in Halifax or other areas in Nova Scotia?

Thanks,
Louise

No, it's not unfortunately. It's very much about who you know, not what you know. If you're looking for work outside of Halifax, expect it to be even more difficult.
But also know that NS typically has higher than average unemployment, lowest average wages, and one of the highest rate of tax.

I'm afraid I'm not much use to answer your question... both my partner and I are looking to set up our own businesses! Since we arrived we've been working on setting up my partner's business, and once that's up and running I'll start to focus on mine. I really hope our ideas work because one thing I've been grateful for so far is not to have to be job hunting.

Sorry I can't be more help!

Also has one of the highest minimum wages of anywhere in North America.......... only Yukon and Nunavut are higher I believe
