Bazzz quoted 12,000 CAD for his boss's wife's delivery in Canada in post #3 of this thread
As pregancy is clearly a "pre existing" condition, insurance wont be any help either.
I would badger the airlines to take her back, some will waive the 8 month thing. Really they should not have taken her to canada if they were not prepared to ship her back later on...its not like she suddenly got pregnant.
Most delivieries go along smoothly, but if something DID go wrong, god forbid, it could be potentially bancrupting. Popular rumour has it that in the US one family goes bancrupt every five minutes due to uninsured health care expenses.

The fact that the child is a canadian gives no advantage at all to the parents in terms of sponsorship or leave to remain...not unless they wait 18 years, then the child could potentially sponsor them...but thats hardly usefull in the short term.

We have friends from Canada (Canadian citizens only) who moved to the US and now have 2 kids (born in the US)...does that mean they are US citizens and US citizens only...or can they switch later or gain Canadian citizenship somehow?

Why wouldn't the children, born of two Canadian parents, be Canadian from birth?

I'm not sure what the answer is....these friends of ours have Canadian passports and live in the western US...they were due to fly to Ottawa about 3 weeks ago for a vacation to catch up with family etc...it had been arranged except for the fact that the parents forgot to get passports for the 2 kids....the kids had not flown from the US to Canada in over 4 years and had only crossed the border since that time in a car..they only realized when they were in the lineup at the airport to check in.
The families in Ottawa waiting for them were not amused.....

With the above in mind, I'm not sure if diplomat's children would be excluded if born here, as has been mentioned by someone, but perhaps a different set of laws applies to them.

Yes and the reason is because in Canada, citizenship is by land, ie: being born here. In others it is by blood.

"Who will not become a citizen?
The following individuals will not become citizens under the new law:
People born in Canada who are not citizens because at the time of their birth one of their parents was a foreign diplomat".

Both, British parent = British. Born in Canada = Canadian
