Thanx bazzz - we were hoping to have just the one unit though so we can play our UK dvds and also for recording our camcorder tapes (ntsc) onto disc to send back to family back home as they have multi region dvd players over there, so that would work. It sounds like it will cost us more than we bargained for then

You know bazzz, you are absolutey right! I just looked on Best Buy and actually I was getting it confused with the HD - Hard Drive - DVD recorders!! So yes, I suppose that should be what I should be asking for - a hard drive, upconverting DVD recorder....but with only you offering the advice so far, I guess we are going to have to settle for a High Def player and purchase a separate "hard drive" recorder.........thanx again!!

Hi Kittykerr, it's not just a player I'm overly concerned with, it was a High Def DVD recorder able to play UK dvds we were looking for. However, like I said in my earlier post, we will probably have to buy a cheapish High Def player to play our UK dvds and buy a separate hard disk recorder for recording our camcorder tapes onto DVD..but thanks for the advice anyway

what i meant was i believe most HD players are region free for normal DVD's, and im sure that will include ones with a built in Hard drive.

i've just got a philips multi region dvd, pal/ntsc from ebay, search under this description and it also brings up a hd yamaha multi region but it was around $800 US i think, expensive anyway, philips was $78 US inc tax and shipping, brand new, and hopefully will be better quality than a wallmart special.

They are not automatically region-free. Chances are you will have to hack it. Our HD DVD (upconverter) player was around $80 from Walmart back in Jan 07. It is an RCA model and had to be hacked - this only took minutes.

There is a big difference between an upconverting DVD player and an HD-DVD player.

Am I doing something worng then? I bought a multi-region DVD player, and even though it plays the discs, it comes up black and white on my TV. Anyone know how to get around that? Same thing goes for my british video camera. Nothing short of a pain in the butt!!!!!!!
