British Chocolate?

Can anyone suggest any good stores to buy british goods?
especially chocolate?

I managed to find one stall in a flea market in Pickering. they just seem so expensive.

I am desperatly trying to work on my 13 year old son to convince him that the future is much brighter here!

there must be other parents that understand the value of a choccie bar!

Sorry, everyone!..... but Canadian chocolate is not the same at all.
I still love Canada!!!!!!!!

help mothers desperate plea?

many thanks

Sorry, I can`t help. But if anyone knows where I can get hold of some proper gravy I`d be grateful.

Sobey`s sell the Bisto powder, but at nearly $5:scared: and it only lasts about two dinners.

The granules back in Old Blightly lasted ages....... anyone?

There is a store on Roncesvalles Ave (just east of High Park) in Toronto. It's called Sweet Thrills and they do have a wide variety of British chocolate. Good luck! But beware too much chocolate is not good for you.

Hi there!

i know that this particular store in the new flea market in pickering does sell original bisto powder, also the instant gravy granuals. They also sell a variety of cubes and packet mixes. I know that they also have a shop in oakville i believe. I will try and find out more when i get down there.

I did also find a couple of websites that sell lots of british goods that will deliver to your door.

www.greatbritishgoods.com

they may be helpful if you are looking to buy a few goods.

i only wanted chocolate.

good luck!:D

do you have Superstore where you are? I go regularly and have noticed that they sell the odd British product, including gravy sometimes. at the moment, they are selling Buttons, Flakes,
Caramels, Double Deckers. In the past I have also bought M and S tea, Twirls, Tizer and Iron Bru. Basically, when it's in, buy it as you don't know when it will come back. The price is normal price too, not overpriced like the speciality Brit stores.

Good luck!

Am still yet to find a fish and chips that at least comes close to what we are used to in blighty. I have been to all the ones people have suggested in the GTA, and they are nothing to write home about.

What gets me, is that these people selling the stuff, have the audacity to call it fish and chip british style, how dare they :(

To me, a good fish and chips looks something like the pic below, nice cod fish with some fluffy chips with a bit of vinegar in it :D

Yummy

OH MY you are making me hungry....they look so good I can smell them!!!ummmmmm...We have a good fish and chips resaurant in Bridgewater and I think they have the best fish and chips I have ever had in Canada. You will never get good cod fish in Canada cause it is all full of worms....the haddock is good but someone told me recently that it also has worms in it....well I eat haddock alot and I have never seen any but in cod....well!

At the south end of downtown Kitchener, on King St. and Victoria, there used to be an H. Salt Fish & Chips. They were rather good. It may have closed down, I'm not sure. DO you know if they are still there?

correct me if i am wrong but British chocolate has trade marks, quality control marks and a list of all nutritional information?

Hi,

I moved from the UK 3 years ago... You are right Canadian chocolate just is not the same as British chocolate. I found a website last year, based in Missisauga that sell everything English from choccies to Ready Brek to Billy Connolly videos !!! They even sell selection boxes at Christmastime!!
Check it out, they deliver to your door, I guarantee you will be in heaven just looking at their website. Needless to say I am a very regular customer !!!
As for the fish and chips I have tried them out here and there is NOTHING even close to fish and chips from the chippy!! I am going back for a visit this August and that will be my first meal and a good old fashioned doner kebab will be my second !!! Hope this helps. FYI I live in Manitoba.
Happy eating!!

See...am glad am not the only one that thinks that about the fish and chips round here. Canadians that have never been to blighty, or those that have been back home for god knows when, will not know what we are talking about.

I will even go near what they call Kebobs round here. Give me a good chicken kebab with chilli sauce on it in a paper anyday from good old blighty.

I know that store in mississauga, its just a few minutes drive from my office. I think i will pop in for some crisp today, ready salted walkers crisp
:D Yummy

what about the great FULL ENGLISH BREAKFAST?

I do love the Canadian breakfast but sometimes i really miss the proper bangers!

BANGERS AND MASH!

Someone help please!!!!!!!!!!!

Open a proper English restuarant.

just a few of the home comforts.

Still not enough to go back for though.

SHEPARDS PIE!
TOAD IN THE HOLE!
PLOUGHMANS LUNCH!

I CAN JUST SMELL THE FRESH CUT GRASS OFF THE PUB GARDEN!

MARMITE!
PROPER CHEDDER CHEESE!
WEST COUNTRY GIRL SEE!

I JUST WANT A FEW SMALL THINGS FROM BRITAIN.

THATS IT!
THE QUEEN CAN STAY THERE

CHEERS

xunzi Mar 16th 2004 10:21 am

My local Zehr's and A&P have decent cheeses - Wensleydale, Cheshire and Lancashire. They are a bit pricey though.

I'm on the lookout for Pickled Onion Monster Munch!! If anyone finds 'em available online lemme know please! I actually dreamt about them last night(maybe I shouldn't be posting that lol  )

Oops I found em at www.abitofhome.ca but they're out of stock! argh!!!

babygirl1 Mar 16th 2004 11:30 am

Hi again,

I found marmite in our local Safeways, as well as Crosse & Blackwell Branston Pickle and salad cream !!! I miss the english food soo much, the only thing I want that I haven't been able to buy over here in stores or online is Lucozade and Bisto gravy granules!!! As for bangers and mash, and kebabs etc I have given up on my quest as after 3 years I haven't found anything remotely close to the wonderful tasting food in the UK. I was seriously thinking about opening an English restaurant so I can make REAL Cornish Pasties and Toad in the hole, shepherds pie etc...hmmm maybe will think about it some more..

Hi there fellow chocoholic!!!!

I was in Ontario last year before I moved here and vowed I would never buy another bar of chocolate from Canada ever again!! I even swear the likes of twix taste different!!!!! That was until I moved to Nova Scotia. Theres a store here just outside of Halifax called petes frootique. It was started by a guy from Nottingham who was a greengrocer and he is now a multi millionaire. Now I know its a bit of a trek for you even by Canadian standards but if you go to his website you can email the store for whatever you like. His site is

http://www.petesfrootique.com/shop_online.asp

Happy chocolate eating!!!

BritBob Mar 16th 2004 1:49 pm

I didn`t realise ol` Pete had a website, I shall check that out. He does the evening thing on ATV?

There used to be a Pete`s Frootique here in Moncton, but it moved to Shediac a while back.

There is a Place in Hamilton called
Connaught Fish & Chips
976 Main Street East,

This is the absolute closest I ever came to British fish and chips. and their Mushy peas are good as well.

Not perfect but close!!

Sorry about the last post. I've just signed up and had trouble posting a reply.....didn't realize I had to subscribe to the forum first.

Ok, I'll try again.

I've noticed that no-one has ever mentioned St. Andrews Fish & Chips at Brimley and Ellesmere in Scarborough. They have been around for a long time and were still there this time last year. Also, next door there is a Scottish butchers/bakers and I'm sure you can get chocolate there but I do suspect they will be expensive.

And yes, British Chocolate is best but I still say my favourite is Reese's Peanut Butter Cups!

Another good Website for english sweets (Especially the ones you don't see much anymore ) is:

I'm not sure about posting them to Canada but it's worth a try !

Hello there,

Welcome back and happy St Paddy's Day  How is good ol' Loughton eh? Woodford, Theydon Bois, grage hill, and all that? I like it round there, and was going to buy my flat there, before settling for the docklands.

Do you still get all those soap stars living round there? I know Brian harvey (E17) lives round there, because i was at a party at his house once. The close proximity with london is the good thing about it, and you got the central line running straight up west.

I was back there last August, and it still looked good round there. I lived in Leyton for a while, while at UNI. So you reckon this Chipie is alright then? I know Hamilton very well, i'll give it a go next time am in that area.

dear all,
I am currently waiting for my residency, and I want to work as a chef, I was brought up in a fish and chip shop as a young lad living in nottingham, I would dearly love to open up a traditional "chippy" but I think a lot of the problems that we are suffering is that one of getting hold of what is needed to make traditional fish and chips fish alone seems difficult as for the potatoes canada as never heard of "maris piper or King edwards" as far as I can tell. I have yet to find a decent chippy that actually peels the potatoes and the chips are chunky enough to give some taste to them
Regarding the wish for british goods There is a place in Nova scotia ran by a gentlemen called pete luckett (food network) maybe he could run a mail order service on things like birds custard etc
oh and regarding the fish and chip taste Canola oil or shortening cannot replace good old beef dripping to cook yr fish and chips in
regards to all

I know the booth you are speaking of and unfortunately those are pretty much the going prices for real British foods here. A couple of other places in the area you can try are the But and Ben Scottish bakery on Kingston Road just west of Whites Road (strip mall across from the Payless Drugs) also in Pickering and another Scottish bakery (forget the name) in Eglinton Square on the corner of Pharmacy Ave. and Eglinton Ave. (they are near the food court toward the back of the mall). The one in Eglinton Square has the larger selection, but both have chocolates in addition to the baked goods.
