Default British Bacon - where to get TO area

We are in UK at the moment and enjoying the usual back bacon but when we get back to Ontario that will be end of bacon for who knows when we'll be back in UK.

I know it is expensive and would only buy once in a while but question is where is there a British food shop that sells it? I just did a search on past threads and somebody said there is a butcher in Scarborough so I wonder if he imports bacon. No probably not.

Any help would be appreciated.

Just find a local butcher that will accommodate the cut you want, rather than looking for somewhere that imports it.

I buy Danish bacon from Battaglia's on Lorne Park Road in Mississauga. I like it, obviously, but if I'm not going to be on that street I do quite well with peameal.

Butch will be along soon and he's an expert when it comes to bacon usage.

We buy our meat here:

http://www.thebutchersorganic.com/

Good quality and price and they give a 'locals' discount - not sure how local you need to be. Nice shop.

You can also get back bacon at the meat counter in Loblaws where they will slice it to your desired thickness....its not quite the same but close.

Why don't they do proper bacon here? When we were in the UK last year HID loved the stuff so its not bad taste on the Canadians part, they just don't know any better.

It's just not what's thought of as "proper" bacon by Canadians.

I understand that, but if they had the choice I bet they'd like the proper stuff best.

Thanks for the replies. I have made a note of Butchers and not sure they do back bacon but their sausages are really interesting on their website though all organic which is great but more expensive. Hope to visit there. Also noted Baggatalias. I will certainly check out Loblaws when we get back.

When I lived in Connecticut you could get packets of proper bacon labeled as Irish bacon from most of the supermarkets, it was really the proper stuff and it was only $3.50 a package and it made lovely bacon sarnies. Although finding brown sauce was much harder there. So the irony wasn't missed.

What is with this obsession with bacon? Barely a week goes past without a bacon thread on here.

I have to wonder what it is people have against peameal bacon. I prefer it. Not only is it tasty, the slices are consistant in size and shape. With this 'British' bacon, there is the oval-ish shaped piece of bacon then that dangly bit on the end which is all fatty anyway. What is so great about that?

The fat provides lubrication and flavour during the cooking process. I then cut it off and the Mrs (who prefers streaky bacon) eats it whilst I get her share of the fleshy bit. Peameal just isn't the same, but I think thats because I prefer smoked bacon and I haven't seen smoked peameal bacon anywhere.

That's love, that is.

However, I find peameal to be lubricated most adequately. I had a legend of a bacon sandwich last weekend. Peameal bacon, cheese, proper HP sauce all slapped in a squashy bap. Hard to beat.
