Brit Meetups!

Just found this and wanted to pass it on (sorry if someone's been there and done that! :) ) It is called Brit meetup and covers many areas around the world where expats can meetup for an old gossip. I haven't tried it yet but looks free - if anyone has signed up before have you been to any meet ups? (if so, give us all the gossip or else!) URL is http://www.meetup.com/

Thanks guys (and lasses) ;)

I've just been having a closer look and it looks like you have to select a topic e.g films, technology, pets etc. to meet up with expats - it's good for meeting folks with the same interest as yours but it would be nice to just have a general 'want to be with other Brits 'cos I'm homesick' meetup! Not that I am homesick but I know some others are and wanted to help - ah well, maybe it's still a useful link for some of ya.

Oh hang on - if you type in Brit it links to expat Brit meetups so there is probably a way - just ignore me, I'm waffling...

meetup

Hi,
thanks crazydaisy for the meetup site, i've just had a quick look at it, and for someone who is going to move to halifax next year i think it will be helpful. There are lots of themed meeting points i would not entertain, but meeting mums, yoga and other exercise classes i would try. For people who are new to country don't have any family or friends i think this is a good site to try. thanks again.

Re: meetup

Think this is the same site that i've visited before... however, don't bother with the montreal meetup site... no one really talks there!... is a shame for new folk like us.
Anyway, I reckon britishexpats.com is the best expat site around anyway...

Hi there - has anyone been to any meetups - got any gossip huh, huh, huh??

We've had two meets so far in Winnipeg and now just plotting a Christmas do. Again, any Winnipeggers out there are welcome to join. The URL for the Brit meetup Winnipeg section is http://brit.meetup.com/45

So far we've been to Toad in the Hole and Osborne Freehouse both located in Osborne village. Will maybe try out some Indian restaurants in the future and may even plan some trips that don't involve drinks/eating such as a trip to a toboggan slide, or a visit to Grand Beach - or one to top all trips, a train journey to Churchill, Northern Manitoba to see the polar bears. Wow!

It is really worth the money and time to take the trip to Churchill to see the polar bears. They are magnificent animals. I took the trip when living in Manitoba as a kid and have never forgotten it. :D

Not only old, but ugly and fat as well - nice attempt at a "save" on your part though - that english charm is always working isn't it? :D

mmm....and who was it that was telling us a few months ago about a liaison with the most beautiful woman he had ever met in his younger years......the name escapes me for the moment.......but I'm sure it will come back to me.

Well, I thought so, but wouldn't know where to begin to look for the message again, but knowing the person involved, I'm sure he could state the time and date off the top of his head!!!! :D

Is this what you refer to, perchance? No liaison there, but probably what you meant...

I taught myself a little Dutch many years ago after I met some Dutch people in France. We used to correspond in English, and I thought it would be fun to try to write to them in Dutch. But then I visited the Netherlands and was unable to contact the beautiful Ingrid, who suggested that I might 'naar de pomp lopen'. I gathered that she didn't mean that she was thirsty!

Ahem - I said Brit meetup, not Brit beat up! But carry on guys - it sure beats Eastenders (not that I could bear to watch it these days anyway!). Talking of bears - I had the chance to check out the web cam at www.polarbearcam.com The polar bears are normally in Churchill during Oct/Nov while they wait for the Hudson Bay to freeze, so you get to see them lazing around, babes in tow, ahh, such a lovely sight. It's a good long trek from here - 2 days and nights by train but should be good fun and well worth it! ;)

Only you, only you....could find an obscure message like that. I thought there had been some sort of liaison or something between the two of you - perchance there was another message with a little more action? I'm sure i saw one. :D

It's called going off-topic and happens all the time and is always done in good fun.

Again, it really is worth it. I can't remember how we got there whether by car or train. They had a CBC special about Churchill and how during certain times of year they had to put the bears to sleep because they were coming into the town and walking along the street trying to find food. Can you imagine one day looking out your window and seeing a polar bear with cubs strolling down your street.....really amazing. After you go, let us knwo your thoughts about the experience. It's been a very long time for me. :D

Yes I know it's off topic - hence my comment :o Fun yes but not always fun for the poor shmuck who wants to read the real topic originally stated which has somehow got hidden away, way deep inside some strange conversations perpertrated by strange and weird imaginations that only the writer can truly appreciate the direction and meaning within which they may be going in the cold dark wilderness of the BBC cupboard within which Gordon the Gopher used to reside.. Mmmm, sorry, you've got me at it now

But it's lots of fun, sometimes more fun than staying on-topic.

What part of Winnipeg are you living in? I was born in St. Boniface, and lived there for a number of years, before finally moving and living in East Kildonan? before we left Manitoba for Ontario permanently.

Lots of snow in Winnipeg these days?

Rhodes Dec 5th 2004 7:10 am

Re: Brit Meetups!

I think that we ought to make a sepcial efort to keep on topic, though.

St Boniface is the patron saint of brewers, I believe. Are there breweries in the area?

It's true, it's true....I belong to off-topic anonymous for my addiction to going off-topic ( though there are certain people here that certainly help). :D

In answer to your off-topic question (although I did mention Winnipeg in my meetup meessage so it's 'slightly' relevant - and hey, I was the leader of the polar bear discussion - oh, but I do love them). Anyway, Winnipeg has had a tough time. A really coldish and rainy summer, then wahay a warm and sunnyish early November. Then we had snow which was cool - nice and dry and the sun came out, so managed to continue our lunchtime walks even though it was -17! But then it decided to warm up and freezing rain was followed by several cm's of ice everywhere so is not quite so much fun. At least snow is easier to walk on.

We live close to the Red River South East of Winnipeg and loving it so far. Only arrived in March and although I got a job pretty quickly, hubby is still looking for work so I can't say it's been easy. Not too sure about St.Boniface - did drive through once to sample the French flavour but it all looked quite depressing with industrial estates and such that my vision of Parisian street cafes kind of went out the window. Ah well! I can't wait until the Winter festival at the Forks when they have husky sleigh rides, and we're hoping to go to Assiniboine Park near Christmas to see the lights, go down the toboggan slide, maybe have a little skate on the duck pond (in your dreams!) and go and see the miniature railway. Should be good - now what was the topic again? Ah yeah - a rodent in a broom cupboard... :D (what were they thinking?)

I was so young when we moved from St. Boniface that I had to ask my parents. They told me that when they first came to Canada and lived there, it (St. Boniface) was an entity onto itself (not part of Winnipeg), and was a small family community with french signs, stores and so on. My parents have been back a couple of times and apparently it is now part of Winnipeg and has become an Industrial basin so to speak. Very different from years ago.

You're bringing back so many memories for me. Tobogganing and skating in Assiniborne Park in -40 weather.....those were the days. My brother was a real hockey nut so my brother/dad built a ice rink in our back yard for us to skate on most of the time. Do they still have that huge slide in the park that was used all year round?

Have you gone to see the polar bears in the park? Assiniborne Park is so beautiful all year round. We use to go as kids to see the bears, have picnics in the summer.

Glad to hear that things are going well for you in Winnipeg. I'm sure your hubby will find a job soon. Enjoy the weather (hehehe), the one reason I would never move back. Although we did have a cottage at Lake of the Woods just outside of Kenora and I would move back for that reason alone.

Now, what was the original topic again? before I get in trouble with the serious Rhodes again?.......
