I think just out of natural reaction, I'd immediately dive in after my dog.
May be stupid, but...*shrugs*

OP, Nova Scotia appears to have a set of reasonable & sensible dog laws.
We have an English Bull Terrier & a new bitch of indeterminate stock.
We took the new dog in because the dog fosterer had her for a year due to her looking vaguely like a Pit Bull. She is sweet natured and gentle, a miracle considering she was thrown from a speeding car on the highway after spending the first three months of her life chained outside. They caught the delightful man who did this and fined him. Contrary to popular misconception no dogs are able to "lock" their jaws. Poor dog ownership and the popularity of certain breeds with the scummier sections of society (tattoos excepted, I have many) is almost wholly responsible for the skewed statistics. I have children, cats & dogs & have a pretty healthy handle on who I would be willing to rescue from a swollen river.

Nice sentiments here from many, JoeSleepy you sound like our kind of people
Will add NS to the list of possible destinations, though the goalposts have moved hugely as my lady had two job opportunities in Ontario, we will now have to find out how to research job opportunities in these other provinces, haven't a clue how to go about doing that at the moment

OH has scars still from being attacked by a pit bull. I was recently intimidated by pit bull owners at the dog park, who blamed *my* dog for "riling theirs up" , up to and including their dogs jumping on top of the dog park's fence near my 4 year old. They were huge and I was really scared.
the whole "it's the owner' thing is such a bogus argument. It's not just the owner. If irresponsible owners all had Pekingneses, do you think they'd be such a threat to other people, children, animals? I know of 3 dogs in my neighbourhood that have been seriously injured by pitbulls. They are big, muscly, strong dogs that can inflict a LOT of damage. I personally think Burnaby needs dangerous breed bylaws and I hope they're coming soon.
And I agree Staffies are not pitbulls. I love staffies. I'm talking about the american pit bulls.

Overstated, but I know what you mean. I don't think dogs are wolves but sometimes I think people anthropomorphize their dogs and make assumptions about how they will act that are based on human thoughts rather than dog ones. For instance, people who walk their dogs off-leash in my neighbourhood. Oh, they're SURE little Boris won't nip. He would never do that. But it's a dog. You just don't know 100% what will trigger it.

A Dodge Ram is a big, muscly, strong vehicle that can do lots of damage in the hands of an irresponsible driver. Should the law prevent them being sold to responsible owners?

Me. There's a breeder of mastiffs up the street, the dogs are a sideline to her stallion boarding barn. One stallion owner was foolish enough to also board a large goat at the barn. Gone. Mastiff snack. It must have made eye contact.

Fair enough. Wont argue. (by the way what kind of Mastiff?)

She calls them "English Mastiffs". Very large dogs, black and brown, jowly, slobber all the time, not to be looked at directly. Can probably cut and paste a picture from facebook, hang on...
Pregnant one, no indicator of size...
Puppy one, imagine this head the size of a football.
