Have been in Cowtown for 2 months now, all going swimmingly well
only thing i seem to miss from blighty is some branston to put on my (admittedly bad) cheese with saltine crackers
have seen it in one of the superstores in speciality aisle or similar but it looked very expensive for a small jar - does anyone know of any good cheap sources or alternatively a home made recipe i could pass on to my canuck wife Mrs BQ

Not only is it very expensive, but it is not even the same ..... I don't mind too much, but my son insisted on buying the real McCoy at the British store in the Au Clair market when he spotted it there. Cost him an arm and a leg and two front teeth .... and he guards it jealously!

I have a jar in my fridge, Crosse and Blackwell Branston Picke. Small jar and tastes just the same as UK version, (to me anyway)
Got it from Save-on-Foods i think .

Until recently the Branston that was available in Canada was made in Switzerland and was pretty similar to the UK version. However several months ago they switched from the European version to one made and co-packed by Smuckers in the US who make all the preserves. Sounds more sensible except that Smuckers changed the recipe and butchered the whoel thing. It isn't even vegetarian anymore as Smuckers for osme reason insisnts on putting Worcestershire Sauce in it with the anchovies. I sell it in my store and I have tried in vain to get either the European one back or the proper English one. Unfortunately the English one isn't officially exported so it has no distributor or legal Canadian packaging, you can only get it from the small UK importing specialty stores that bring it into the country themselves. When I went back to the UK this summer I threw a few jars in my suitcase as a good cheese & branston sandwich is one of my favourites. Incidentaly you can buy decent UK cheese from a good cheese store, we sell quite a few from Red Leicster to Chesire to Wenslydale and Lancashire and then fancier ones like stilton and farm made cheddars etc. all imported though so fairly expensive. Saying that my favourite currently is some good Balderson Cheddar which is made in Canada, their Old Cheddar is really rather good.

I used to buy it regularly when it was imported (Real Canadian Superstore), but since they started making it here it tastes totally different (and no-where near as good).

I can't taste the difference either. But then I'm growing fond of Canadian Cadbury's so I guess it's game over for me.
If you eat enough of it, you'll grow to love it too

(I don't think I'll ever love the North American Branston, though - at least not at the price they charge)

All these "I miss" threads boil down to familiarity Im afraid. Its really not about branston, or beans or whatever, its about familiarity. Over time you just adapt and get used to it.
