Default Blood Donation

me again.

Just gave blood here yesterday, and was told by the donor carer that I wouldn't be able to donate in Canada because of CJD/BSE ??!!

Does anybody know if this is true ?

i was under the impression that if you have lived out of canada for more than 6 months in one stretch you cant give blood here anyway. my husband is a canadian national and as he is in the military he has lived in the uk for 3 years. since he came back to canada last year he cant donate anymore as he always used to. i thought maybe it was something to do with all the jabs hes had in the navy but no apparently it applies to everyone. i think also in the uk if you have lived outside or visited certain countries you cant give blood either. as i am like getting blood out of a stone i am quietly releived now!!!!

Yup, can confirm you won't be able to donate blood in Canada as a Brit - tried it myself.

We're "tainted" with CJD, alas.

FWIW when I first came they were quite happy to take an armfull, but they changed their mind about 4 years ago now. I think it is more to do with fear of litigation after the Hep cases if a few years ago nearly caused the service to fold, rather than a real fear that all us brits are on the verge of slipping over our udders!

They take blood from me all the time - with GST, PST, property and income tax it is a wonder I am still standing!
