Let me rephrase my comment about the weather, Victoria along with Nanaimo have the mildest weather in all of Canada rarely dropping below zero in winter,it is actually classed as a Mediterranean climate this is not my opinion I am quoting Environment Canada. As for a fish packing plant I do not think there is one.

Hi there - I too am in my late twenties and spouse mid thirties, we have lived in Vancouver for 4 years, we came straight over here on a visa to start off with and have been a PR since Dec 08.
I.T is HUGE here in Vancouver as boyf works in games industry...it got us out here. I am in recruitment and know lots of IT specialist recruiters (I don't specialise in that area) that I can put you in touch with.
Financial services is not as big a hub as Toronto...Vancouver is quite small for financial services really, there are not many head offices here. You might be lucky but with the current economy and recent cut backs it could be tough going trying to find those star jobs.
Best of luck in the next year and don't hesitate to ask more!

I find that rather hard to believe. Apart from the game company, which software houses are based in Vancouver? Which major corporations have their computer departments in Vancouver?

Do you know of a great number of potential employers for computer people in Vancouver? I don't. I do know lots of computer people who went there and came back when their money ran out. I know of one who found a job; at about half what he was earning in Toronto.

I think that's less than "harsh criticism". If someone were to assert that central London is a good place to pursue a career as a coal miner I'd ask them which pits exist within the circle line.

I appreciate your comments, but please don't be having a go at the people trying to help. A simple "that has not been my particular experience..this is what I know about it..." would suffice.
I gather you would suggest Toronto instead?
Thanks

It's not what you said, but perhaps the way it comes across in a post....

Re fish packing, was quoting a colleague of mine who work in recruitment in Nanaimo who had plenty of highly skilled candidates who couldn't get jobs in their field of expertise including plenty in IT who were working in fish packing factories.

Its an island that does get a substantial amount of rain, although it does have a mild climate just like the UK.

Cheers, FS! I guess some people are a bit unaware.... but most industries are cyclical and what has been boom is not going to be buoyant in this market, no matter what it used to look like. Gaming & technology is still a massive epicentre here in Vancouver but it too, has been hit hard...EA completely shut their downtown office, some studios struggling. Nobody is immune!
It looks like I have a message (from you maybe?) but I cannot access it as it says "The administrator has restricted use of the private message system to members with more than 3 posts."....how ridiculous!! I'll try you...

I think its a pretty standard feature on all internet forums to disable internal messaging at first to prevent abuse. You could always email anyway I think.

Perhaps I am unaware. That's unfortunate for someone in the software business but I suppose it could be so. Apart from the game company, which software houses are based in Vancouver? Which major corporations have their computer departments in Vancouver?
