Best curry in Halifax
Okay, I did a search for this as I remember reading something in the past but I couldnt find the thread - sorry.
The wife and I are planning to go out for a curry tonight - which is the best place in Halifax for an authentically British curry? We cant decide between the Curry Village and Taj Mahal - anyone been? Are there others? |
Re: Best curry in Halifax
Go to Canadian Superstore.....buy a jar of Patak Biryani (not tin).
I use that as my spices to add to the chicken and lots of onions. I also add tomatoes, we like Rogan Josh. If you like hotter curry's, the Madras it good . Three years in Canada, it's the best I have had!!!! Good luck. Linda |

<chuckles recalling distressed daughter's description of Halifax>
"Daddy, it's just so white, they don't even have curry" |

Thanks for the tip but we were actually hoping for a night out without children!
I seem to think Val50 recommended the Taj Mahal to me, does it look a bit "dodgy" on the outside? |

I think that this is the thread you were thinking of http://britishexpats.com/forum/showthread.php?t=465223
The Taj does look favourite. Let me know how it goes. |

But I do great ones myself using curry powder (and a sprinkling of chili powder) and some Campbells cream of mushroom soup (undiluted) to thicken after it's cooked through. |

There are some Thai sauces in tins at Superstore too. The Yellow Curry one is brilliant.

Re: Best curry in Halifax
'Chinese' curry is quite different to 'Indian' curry. I like Indian food but I prefer a Chinese curry. However, Canadian Chinese curry is quite different again.
So to speak of a British Curry may not be as strange as it seems. ;) My wife had never heard of a Chinese Curry in Quebec. Some Chinese places in NB have them, but they really are different to those I had back in the UK. They're more like a curried stir-fry. Nice enough, just not the same. |
Re: Best curry in Halifax
Been to both, much prefer the Taj Mahal

Re: Best curry in Halifax
Not a recommendation for eating out, but a good tip for all DIY curry makers - there's a spice shop with large bags of every kind of spice you'll ever need, plus sacks of basmati etc, over on Main Street in Dartmouth.
It's called Curry & Spice (I think), and it's on the left, in the small strip mall just after Major Street as you head out of Dartmouth from downtown: link here. The prices seem to be a bit better than Superstore, and it's nice to support a local outlet for this kind of thing (especially on Main Street!) so we don't have to go to Pete's every time! |
