Hi all
Just wondering which credit card would be the best to acquire and are there any I can apply for in the U/K.Would like to be able to use on recce. trips and immediately on landing.Do I need to have a permanent Canadian address to get one. All replies gratefully received,Thanks

I have an American Express card. Contrary to my expectations people do not step back in awe when I wave it and yet it costs several hundred dollars a year. This leads me to believe that any card is as good as another, I'd look for one with no fees.

As far as I have been told by our own bank (HSBC at the mo), you must have a Canadian address in order to receive a credit card. However, it seems perfectly ascceptable to use almost any address you can trust. We used the address of friends we made last year to have our credit cards issued. They will be there for us to collect when we "land" next week. It's the same for PR cards when they are issued.

In my opinion, this is the best no fee card in Canada (and their bank account come to that); you can always use free groceries. I am sure you will need a Canadian address though.

I've heard the new TD card is good fo travel points. MY HSBC Matercard is also good for travel rewards

I got one from TD. Due to having no credit history, I secured it with a deposit in a savings account. I could put in however much I wanted, and that amount would be my credit limit. I needed a Canadian residential address for this (ie no PO box).

I was turned down for a President's Choice card due to no credit history.

I think most of the banks will give you a credit card if you have an address and secure it with a deposit. If you have no credit history it will be difficult to get a credit card without a deposit.

I also have an American Express card but no annual fees and I get Airmiles with it.

Do have to agree that people do not step back in awe though.

That's exactly what I did with Bank of Montreal. It's called a secure credit card. I had to put $2k in a secure account which I couldn't touch for a year and that was also my credit card limit. After the year was up they gave me all that money back plus any interest and I carried on using the credit card like a normal one. I have been bombarded with credit card applications from everyone and his brother ever since.
For an address, set up a mailbox address with Mail Boxes Etc. The address looks just like an apartment address and the bank are none the wiser.

If you have a UK Amex they will transferee you to the equivalent Canadian amex when you move at same credit limit.
