I'm not a fan of the big corporates either...but I've worked for them and in retail and retail banking it is not nice to make mistakes because some toss pot middle manager comes down on you hard. Walmart are ruthless and that $99 will be missed by some line manager.

Also I do not believe she did not notice till she got home. I credit her with more intelligence than that- surely she would've noticed instore if it was charged the other way......although she is on a forum boasting about it so who knows........

As there was NO intent to leave the store without paying for the items then whoever mentioned that this is tantamount to theft is talking bollocks.
As mentioned before, you win some, you lose some!

It's not theft but it's not a million miles away. It's still dishonestly appropriating property which is much of what defines theft.

We all make our own choices in life but I wouldn't be making that one myself.

Im pretty sure they cant legally do that...

As an aside I cant believe how many people here come over so "holier than thou". This forum is not supposed to be some sort of bullies pulpit.

I felt momentarily guilty yesterday after finding a flat of "own brand" coke under my shopping cart that I had forgotten to lug onto the checkout conveyer. The guilty feeling passes soon when I figured that they had made more than enough profit from me over the years Ive shopped there to cover the cost. Granted it was only a $5 item, but the value is maybe incidental in the moral argument. Its not like the OP set out to rip walmart off.

Or you just use your brains check your receipt and then you win all the time because you are paying for everything at the price you agreed to pay in the first place.

I can't seem to climb up to the moral high ground in this thread.

And flipping it the other way I can't believe the forum is supposed to be a place where people describe how they ripped of other people because they are "stupid and little" - some might say a form of bullying in itself.

Some things you should not post thread's about.

I'm a stupid little retail clerk, can't say girl anymore....can't really say little either:eek: I resent that phrase, it's not a choice career move, it's necessity and it certainly was NOT my dream when moving to Canada:thumbdown: And what make me less intelligent than someone who had the opportunity to get a degree and who knew what career path they wanted to follow:curse:

I work in two stores - one a big corporation and the other a family owned gift store, mistakes are made on occasion, usually when the shopper is trying to confuse the staff.

There was an occasion at Christmas time, where we (family owned store) were having problems with the debit machine ( you can bet your bottom dollar if it were the corporation the machine provider would've sorted it quick). It kept going offline. Now the cash register and system are something out of the ark. After several swipes trying to get the debit machine to accept the card it went through - $256 and a few cents. Only it didn't go through, most machines say approved or declined ours say not approved, when your busy it is unfortunately easy to miss the not. I still feel bad that the owners lost $256 worth of product and sales on top of the sales we missed on the days we could not take debit or credit, something like 60% of business is done over Christmas.

On the other hand, a lady was not charged for $20 worth of stuff (another person, not me). She didn't notice until she got home - an hours drive away, she called to let us know and then drove back the next day to pay. Strangely enough it was another that was not approved and no one noticed until the customer had left. The customer then came back a third time to pay  It's funny how her name was drawn out for the monthly draw;)

I would say that the majority of people do not inspect there receipts before leaving the supermarket.
There will obviously numerous mistakes not picked up straight away in either the retailers favour and sometimes the customers favour. Items scanned at wrong price, items scanned twice or not at all.
Its obviously a different story with nipping into a shop for a couple of items but if you on a weekly or indeed monthly shop.
Good to see that someone is keeping a close eye on the retailers.

Yes, well, we are not all the fine morally upstanding character that you are are we:lol:

It was perhaps an unfortunate choice of words, but lets face it, confusing $50 for 50c is in fact pretty stupid (although I tend to give the benefit of the doubt and maintain that its never a stupid mistake unless you make it more than once.), and neither you or I were there to judge how tall she was...

Oh yes they can - it happened to a friend of ours.

The OP managed to miss it too so I guess that makes them pretty stupid too.

So there would be no problem for the retailer to credit your account when after a varience check it is discovered that they have overcharged you.:o
Hands up all those that have heard of this happening.

Wow. That's a surprise. I can easily see missing the 'not' - or even assuming it went through - but I imagined that no receipt would actually be produced by the machine in such an instance and its absence would indicate a problem.

Agreed, unless there's something glaringly obvious. I do have a rough idea what what the cost is likely to be though. That helps. Charged $40 when I was expecting $30 :blink:made me notice the receipt showed one item twice.

A total of $60 seemed too high on another occasion and 20 items at $2 had been input instead of 2 of them.

And there have been occasions when the wrong grocery item was input. These things result in minor over or undercharging. That's a fact of life and might even out.
