For free banking it has to be PC Financial but newcomers might have problems with them as they run a credit check (yes, even for savings accounts or checking accounts with no credit facility!), and they don't accept cheques for initial deposit without pre-printed address on them.
But as with all banking threads, someone'll be along in a minute to say they had no problems with the above issues![Wink](https://britishexpats.com/forum/images/smilies/wink.gif)
See the Wiki on banking for more info.

On the subject of Canadian banks, do they do a UK credit check?

I thought it might be helpful to get an Equifax report done before leaving for Canada, and providing it for the bank to look at?
How else would they check up on you?

Well we arrived in Canada on 1st June, opened an account at RBC and 2 days later were given $5000 credit card and no probs at all, we didn't have a credit history in Canada. Its our local branch and they call us by our names etc... Very helpful.
Hope this helps

Unfortunately all Canadian Banks are crap compared to UK banks (one of the few bad things about the country) but you have to live with it. Been with TD now for 4 years and they are as good as your gonna get out here plus have long opening hours compared to a lot of other banks.
