Becoming a Paramedic in Canada

Congrats Philip!! It's fantastic to see that you made a successful switch!

There is a great new resource available, recently developed by 2 paramedics (one from the Yorkshire Ambulance Service) that now ply their trade here too. It's worth checking out if anyone is looking to research a move to Canada: http://www.internationalparamedics.com/
Just to caveat the above, I'd suggest anybody reading steers clear of their 'visa/immigration' section as it's pretty hopeless! Hopefully the rest of their info is more accurate.
Edit.....I see why their info is incorrect, the immigration company they recommend aren't even licensed. That would explain it! I've removed your email address from the above post btw, we ask that you don't post personal contact info on the forums please, people can contact you via the forum if they wish to.
Thx.

Hi all! PM me if you need any information on the transition from UK to British Columbia, a lot has changed since 2008! Lots of opportunities opening up here! I started the training from scratch - we have a few more people who can connect about their experiences in applying to transfer (some challenging - some awesome).
I still work at the Justice Institute of BC and BC Emergency Health Services - living the dream! Make the move!

Ill be honest with you though, nursing is very different to paramedicine and unless you have pre hospital or at least ED experience I think you’d struggle to make the transition, you might be surprised by the autonomy a paramedic has.
If you do decide to give it ago I genuinely wish you good luck and if you want any more info please PM me.

I was surprised to learn that paramedics only get paid by the call. It seems new paramedics end up in the back of nowhere where call volumes are low, so don't get paid a whole heck of a lot. It is surprising we have anyone wanting to do the job!

Thats not entirely true. In big cities most staff are full time and get paid by the hour. In rural areas most are on call but they get paid an ‘on-call’ rate and then paid hourly when the are on a call.

I've just searched the NOC data, and seems the median salary for a paramedic is $32 an hour, so approx $66,000 a year (£40k). But depending on where you go and where you are coming from, cost of living may be higher in Canada, so there are other factors to look at as well as the salary.
This thread is quite old now, so you may not get any responses, I'd suggest that you start a new thread of your own with your questions on. If you've already got a visa allowing you to work in Canada, that's worth mentioning, or if you have a visa route in mind, as that needs to be the first step really.
Best of luck.

Please feel free to touch base on working here in Alberta

You can find out more about how to qualify as a paramedic in Ontario by using the links on this page; MOHLTC - EHS - Education - Equivalency
Standard Equivalency
Paramedics who have completed a paramedic training program from another country or do not meet the AIT Equivalency requirements and want to work as a paramedic in Ontario must undertake the Standard Equivalency Process.
There's also a useful section on this page: https://torontoparamedic.com/become-a-paramedic/ and Paramedic Association of Canada Home Page

HI All, Considering a move out with my family (Currently UK paramedic). Curious as to the time-frames and current opportunities in BC. Any info would be great. Thanks, Nick

Timeframes will depend on the visa route, which were you planning on going down?
No idea on paramedic opportunities, but others will be able to advise on that, and a search of the forum will reveal lots of info on previous threads as well as on this one.
Best of luck to you.

Thank you, amazingly quick response. I am still getting my head around the process. I believe (from the internet) that Degree Qualified Paramedics are in demand and I can apply for Express Entry to Permanent Residency Visa. Furthermore, my understanding is that I would have to get my PCP Licence in BC before applying for a visa/job.

If you do score enough then expect it to take around 3-4 months to gather all of your paperwork before being able to apply, and if you're scoring high enough and get an invite to apply in the next draw, it then takes around 6 months after applying to get PR. So around a year in total as a rough guide.
HTH, best of luck.
