Just checking the news and almost hidden away (amazingly!) at the moment, I notice that BC (an island nr Prince Rupert, I believe) had an earthquake - 7.7 mag last night, and Tsunami advisories are out as far away as Hawaii.
Not sure at this stage of effects, know there have been aftershocks too, and people advised to stay away from coast/seek higher ground...
Latest the Tsunami warnings downgraded, Hawaii still on alert... http://www.ctvnews.ca/tsunami-warnin...uake-1.1013815

My sister lives in Vancouver and wasn't aware there had been an earthquake until I contacted her on Facebook. So I would assume its pretty localised to the island that was affected.

Yep - I think BC had minimal effects from the earthquake. We have been watching CNN (still are) for the Hawaii tsunami warning - which appears to be not as bad as first thought.

I suppose it comes with the territory with the san andreas fault skirting along the BC coastline. Doesn't put me off moving to Vancouver one bit. After all life is short and you could easily get knocked down by a bus tomorrow.

I was living in US when Hurricane Andrew hit (though holidaying in Colarado at the time), and arrived in LA just after their big earthquake happened (felt the aftershocks though). Don't worry though - I'm not a jinx (!)
....And yes, you can get knocked down crossing the road, etc., etc.

You know, I am of exactly the same opinion - we are looking to move to Vancouver Island - Victoria, and yes, earthquakes could occur - but many things could happen anywhere...

My father lives in Victoria. Not a peep out of him on the email/FB front so I assume it was a non event locally.
Did the earth move for you??

We live half way up Vancouver Island and never felt it but that could be because we had quite a bit of wine lol - then our neighbour phoned and told us about the Tsunami warning, we looked it up on internet and after putting a few things in car, decided that the tide was only 4ft and that it would be a non-event btw we are 3ft above sea level hence our neighbour phoning us! So for us a non-event.

Earthquakes here are not uncommon. The biggest one that we felt in the LM was centered around Seattle back on 99 I believe.

Evidently it registered as a 5.5 in kelowna? Here in north van we did not feel a thing, though that may be due to the bloody construction that's everywhere at the moment!
Basically
Seattle, Vancouver and Victoria are toast if the big one hits, on the up side...might bring property prices down

When we arrive we're moving to high ground in a log house in the Sooke Area. Hopefully that'll keep us sorted if a big one hits
