Yes indeed. I varies too much city to city to not verify where to go. In some places where you take the driving test is also completely different from where you go for the written test....

That's how it is in Chilliwack. Although that's also how it usually is in the UK so I don't find that too strange haha.

2) What happens to your UK drivers license - is that still valid in the UK or does it get cancelled in some way? If still valid, do you continue to renew the photocard in the UK?
3) Am I correct in assuming the process is exactly the same for a returning citizen and for a PR? (I couldn't find any info suggesting otherwise)
4) If my husband's PR hasn't come by the time we get to Canada, presumably he needs to wait until PR arrives to exchange his license?

It's an enormous PITA because in Canada they want to see an abstract from the insurance company specifically and in the UK they don't do that anymore, they have a central clearing house to prevent fraud. So you have to go around all your previous insurance companies and beg them for a letter and hope they'll give you one. If you don't have it you get hit with higher insurance rates.
Under BC law it is illegal to hold more than one licence so you have to get rid of it if they don't take it off you. Keep a photocopy of it, helps with the driving history.
You have to show proof of your status.
Needs some sort of proof of legal residence.

And to just add, they for sure take Visitor Records as I took my driving test on one this morning. Though she did say to make sure it has more than 6 months on it, otherwise they won't issue you a card (you'll just get a piece of paper).

I was going to apply to DVLA for the driving record.
Are you saying I'll need to take the letters from insurance companies with me as well when I get my BC drivers license?

I thought the letters from insurance companies were for getting a no claims discount on your insurance, rather than a drivers license.

Yes sorry, I thought you mentioned ICBC insurance or someone did. To not be treated as a new driver you need your insurance records.

Thanks, and I'm already chasing my insurance companies for these. Thought I should start early, given the likelihood of them misunderstanding what I need and getting it wrong. Ah, the joys!
