Default Banks in Canada

I'm sure other people have started threads about this, but any opinions with banks in canada?

I've been recommended to set up an account with RBC royal bank... are they good? any bad opinions about them? all we want is a daily current account and a saving account... plus the option for credit cards at a later date.

any advice would be most welcome.

If all you want is the service you've mentioned there, then RBC might not be the way to go, they charge a monthly fee for transactions, like a few others.

You might want to checkout ING, and pcfinancial, we use this 2, and there isn't a charge, the latter even give you points, kind of like TESCOS, when you shop at loblaws, zehrs, valu mart, no frills and a few other grocery stores.

check these out, other member might know of others too that don't charge a fee. RBC had problems with their computers a few weeks back.

Default No Fees

Bank charges in canada are a personal gripe of mine, used to drive me crazy coming from the fee free UK.

I went with PC Financial...no fees, interest on your chequing account, no fees, free mastercard with points off groceries and "gold card" like purchase insurance, no fees. Service seems fine, I never was much of one to use the counter services anyway, so I dont miss them with the phone / internet setup and kiosks in a couple of local grocery stores. And no fees.

Service is actualy provided by a subsidiary of CIBC, but there are no fees. Did I mention it has no fees?

right, thanks for the advice...how easy is it to get an opening account with one of these banks recommended (pcfinancial and ING)... was thinking of starting an account with RBC royal bank, just so we have an account (should be easy since we have direct contact with a manger there through my canadian work place) and then once sussing out the place transferring to another... but if we can skip all that and get a good account straightaway... all the better. So any ideas?

Whoa where have I been? Didnt know PC Financial had no fees, better open an account there instead, CIBC recently put up the minimum amount I have to keep in my chequeing account to $1500 otherwise more fees.
