I have no complaints haven't paid any bank fees for the past 20 years. This is my account details with the TD, but is available with all banks if you are over 60. http://www.tdcanadatrust.com/accounts/plan60.jsp

Re: Banking Issues
However, many, if not all, Canadian debit cards also support international bank networks like Visa, and you can use those debit cards anywhere that the network is supported. Next time you are outside Canada, take a look at the logos on cashpoints which tell people which cards are accepted.
Oh, and one last wrinkle. You can set a PIN greater than 4 digits on the Interac system, but if you do that, the debit card will not work on any other network. 4 digit PIN is required internationally.
And don't use a foreign debit card to get money in Canada unless you are a tourist. If you are a resident, then set up an account with something like xe.com so that you can buy/sell foreign exchange at market rates.

I've bought stuff in the US before now just using my debit card. Usually not a result of intent, more by accident.
