Hi all,
I am moving to Calgary in 18 days. I have just left my employment working for a bank in London. Casually one afternoon I was looking at a banking calneder of the world and noticed that Montreal had 10 bank holidays this year. Almost one every month, for ten months. Is this true does Canada have a fair few bank holidays that I can look forward to?

You get Xmas/Boxing Day, New Years Day, Family Day in Feb(Alberta), Good Friday, maybe Easter Monday if you are lucky, Victoria Day in May, Canada Day in July, Labour Day in Sept, Thanksgiving in Oct, Remembrance Day in Nov, I think that may be it......................so only March, June, August without one.

The other nice thing is that Canada spreads the public hoidays out so it's one long weekend every month for most of the year!

Canada does have a long weekend ( bank Holiday) some differ depending on the province you are in BC there is one almost every month of the year except Feb, March, June we get New Years Day in Jan, nothing in Feb or March (longest time of the year
) Easter Friday and for some companies Easter Monday in April, Victoria Day in May, Canada Day in July, Labour Day in Sept, Thanksgiving in Oct, Remembrance Day in Nov (I hear this is not a day of in the East Provinces) Christmas and Boxing Day in Dec now if your in Retail in BC most stores are open on bank holidays and Sundays the only day closed is usually Christmas Day as a side note for those with kids coming to BC Spring Break for kids at school is one week in March and just over a week at christmas and then 8 weeks in the summer.

If you are in Ontario the statutory holidays are:
New Years
Good Friday
Victoria Day (Third Monday in May)
Dominion Day, July 1
Labour day
Thanks-giving (Third Monday in October)
Christmas day
Boxing day
The first Monday in August is a Civic holiday and an employer does not have to give you an hourly premium if you work that day, but most do anyway.
Banks, post office and government offices are also closed on Easter Monday and Remberance day - Nov. 11.
So, if you work for a bank you will have 11 days off in addition to your holiday entitlement.

Of course some years Easter is in March, so when that happens it leaves April without.

It's because my hubs company don't give them that one...............................it was either Family day in Feb, or the August one, and they chose Family day in Feb.

If you want holidays, move to Newfoundland. Here is a list of theirs, in addition to the standard ones like Christmas, Easter, Victoria Day, Labour Day, etc:
St. Patrick's Day [March 17]
St. George's Day [April 23]
Discovery Day [June 24]
Memorial Day [July 1]
Orangemen's Day [July 12]
Regatta Day / Civic Holiday [fixed by municipal council orders]
If I remember correctly, the last one is celebrated on a certain Monday in June if it is not raining. If it rains, the local council moves it to another Monday.

Memorial Day in Newfoundland refers to the huge loss that the Royal Newfoundland Regiment suffered in The Great War. All most the entire Regiment was killed on one day, only 56 alive out of over 700 men.
Remember that Newfoundland did not join Canada until 1949, before then it was a Crown Colony of Great Britain. In the summer of 1949 the newfies voted to join Canadian Confederation, so they are the NEWEST Province in Canada. Newfoundland has a 400 year history and is the most friendly place in Canada, barr none.
