I don't know what you are talking about or what kind of people do you hang around with. But I left a very well paid and stable corporate position with a top British company to move to Canada. And before you mention location, yes I have lived in most big cities as well as some small towns in England. I love the country and its scenery, but I hated the growing crowdedness and where the country is heading to thanks to the politicians. Also I thought I would have to cope with less snobs if I moved elsewhere ;)
My theory is the world is big so why live in one place. Explore all while you can. My scenario and out outlook too! Plus the fact for me i was unmarried and had no kids, my parents had died young leaving lots of happy memories that i didnt want to be costantly reminded of, and all my family and freinds were married with kids, so why would I stick around! As you say there explore whats out there! |

What is everybody's definition of "home"? I think that makes a big difference as to whether you feel settled or not. Home to me changed the day I boarded that plane, Canada became mine!
As dual citizens of UK/Australia and residing in Canada with an application for PR in process we currently have 2 options. with a possibility of a third. He instantly said UK, I was totally ambivalent (maybe a reflection of the fact I can't even bear to emotionally commit to anywhere until CIC say yay or nay ). On a totally off topic note I wonder what does happen if you die here as a permanent resident but without citizenship - if you haven't kept your PR status by 'living' in Canada for the prescribed time does your body then get booted out? |

Without trying to be morbid, I was talking to hubby about this the other night and thought maybe one way to tell where you define 'home' as would be ask yourself where would you like to be buried/cremated have your ashes scattered (or whatever else you are having done with your body) when you kick the bucket?

I think if I had to absolutely state where home is, I would say where I was raised in Northern Ireland even though I only spent the first 18 years of my life there (and 32 years elsewhere such as England, Canada and the US). I consider home to be the place where most of my family are and where it's more likely that I'll bump into old friends. |

I don't want there to be only one place where people can "visit" me after I kick the bucket. So I have a (growing) list of 12 places that are meaningful to me where I want to have some of my ashes scattered. So if one of my kids is ever at one of those places after I'm gone, they will know that a piece of me is there.

Re: Back in the UK for 9 months and decided we made the wrong choice!
I did a mate a favour a few years ago and took a woman out on the boat to scatter her husband’s ashes. She was a rather voluptuous blonde woman from Toronto who after discarding the ashes subsequently propositioned me on the way back to the dock. Normally in these situations one doesn’t want to be impolite, but given the circumstances, that she’d just scattered her husband and it was only midday, I declined the offer. Now if she’d had just had the foresight to wait a couple of hours until I’d started drinking, the afternoon might taken an different trajectory. :o
