Default Asthma inhalor - can you buy them over the counter?

My boyfriend is asthmatic, not really badly but sometimes needs a puff on one of those blue inhalers.

When we move over he will be bring a 3 month supply with us, but when he runs out does he need to see a doctor? E.g. a walk in clinic to get a prescription to order another one? Just wondering how it works? Do we also need a letter from our docs in the UK to prove he is asthmatic?

Here in the UK he just gets a repeat prescription or you can buy the blue ones, Ventolin 100 micrograms inhalers, over the counter in Asda for example.
Just wondering if you can buy over the counter at a pharmacy in Vancouver?

How does it work with cost also? I presume we need to get some prescription insurance so the cost is not sky high? How does that work, how do we get it and who should be go with? Or is it sometimes a perk of a job to get these types of insurances on offer as a benefit.

We will not need any inhalers for 3 months or more, but I just wanted to know what our options are and how we go about getting some more in.

It isn't OTC so you will need to see a doc to get a prescription. A walk in clinic would do. No idea about BC health system so can't advise you what's covered

Never knew ventolin was OTC In the UK.

its not over the counter in the UK. You still have to get a repeat prescription which means you can go to a pharmacy and pick one up since the pharmacy has the record on file (or you have the piece of paper). He should be able to bring over more than a 3 months supply. Maybe ask the doctor for a year's supply.

if he runs out in Canada, he will have to visit the doctor. Ask the doctor for the ability to refill the prescription without seeing the doctor again

I googled this and apparently you cann get it in supermarket pharmacies that have the pharmacist there. You have to complete a questionnaire and are only allowed 2 refills every 2 months. Not sure how they can police this though as surely people will just go to a different pharmacy. Maybe there us an onnline register?
