Sounds like the classic "Unadvertised Opportunity". You often have to be more creative than simply responding to ads and mass mailing resumes.

Exactly my point flashman...as an employer I love ingenuity.

I'm going to put my foot right in it here and get a bashing..but please read the remainder of this with an open mind...it is not in any way meant to offend anyone it is simply to give you my observation.

Now my hubby who is English...he would never approach a job the way I did. He feels there is a 'proper' way and as he would say... "We english would never do that" ...implying it would be beneath him. He says it half jokingly...but there is a grain of truth in how his attitude reflects many englishmen in the south of England especially his generation.

So the point here is really...if you are one of those people who wouldn't 'dare' approach a job by any means other than the 'traditional' you could be missing out on a great opportunity.

Hi all,

I know it's a very simplistic view but positive things happen to positive people.

It's all about expectation and being prepared to really get stuck in and be prepared to put up with some hardship short term in order to achieve what we want longer term.

I'm a bank manager but have sounded out temping agencies in Toronto to 'get me started' and try and keep funds ticking over, they've been very positive and suggested I would have no trouble getting some low paid temporary work if needs be. Admittedly this isn't ideal, but if it gets me inside organisations, allows me to demonstrate my abilities, allows me to make contacts and build a circle of Canadian friends then it will have served the purpose I intend it to.

If you bothered to actually READ my post, you would notice that it was your remark that living in the UK "you can afford to jet off abroad for 4-5 weeks a year!" to which I was referring. This is simply not true for many many people, including myself.

I made absolutely NO comment about life in Canada. It was your sweeping generalisations to which I was objecting!

However, if you generalise like that about life in the UK, it does suggest that your remarks on life in Canada are equally sweeping!

Having followed this thread myself and felt my confidence shred with the first few articles, I was relieved that the quote above sums up my (and my fiancees) thoughts exactly. The 'grass isn't greener', we know that but you'd have to be crazy thinking that staying in Britain would be any better. We're going to give it our best shot. We're not blind/daft/thoughtless at what it all entails but neither are we enjoying the 3-4 weeks jetting off and NHS benefits! others have posited as the reasons to stay here - eh!!!!!!!!.

Yes, I'm an optimist some of the time, a pessimist others but I'll be damned if I'll live with my regrets. :D

Thanks Madmac :)

Dawnwynne - I don't think you were putting your foot in it with your previous post. If I have to take a different approach to getting a job in Canada, then that's fine with me. Like I said previously it took me a year to get a job here with loads of rejections, so I can be just as tenacious in Canada ;)

Put one on the bar for me too please!

In relation to the topic of this thread, maybe that's why I want to move to Canada?: The social scene and drinking opportunities. After all, as a Scot it would be like a duck to water (or is that a drunk to Lager :) )

Yup: It's all down to hard work and bloody-minded stubborness. It took me six months and God alone knows how many applications/rejections to get a foot in the door of lecturing after I left university (after working as a laboratory rat for 13 years). Maybe we should organise a club for Stubborn Hardheaded Individuals Tenaciously Searching?

I'll let you work out the acronym :D

You're a Scot ... how many times were you told "if at first you don't succeed, try, try again" when you were a kid?

Wouldnt you break a leg or something, or bounce? I've heard its like the Mersey in that respect:) More likely to die of poisoning than drowning! I guess things have changes as industry has died off.
