Areas Pros and Cons

Neither would be the sort of mega-mansion that immigrant brits dream of when considering Canada. But as a dose of reality...

Average property price where I am is $180k according to the radio this morning.
We have hills, a ski hill even. Not one you would travel to especially for the sake of the skiing, even by Ontario standards, small potatos compared to the resorts 2h north of Toronto, but its got a decent lift and its fill the winter hours with fun.
The trick choosing anywhere to live is to find a job you enjoy and that pays the bills. Most of the rest falls into place after that. There is no such thing as bad weather, only inappropriate clothing. Its a glib cliche, but its partially true. When I first came here I was wondering how I would deal with the winter, but it turns out I actually enjoy the great contrast in seasons here and like getting out in the snow and cold for a few months.
I wouldnt have considered this area, but its where the job was and I am grateful that its turned out well for me. Its a much underrated part of the world IMO.

You would be able to buy a 4 bedroom house in Hamilton for $290k, we don't have mountains though (apart from what they call 'the Mountain' which is part of the Escarpment).
A quick search on www.realtor.com resulted in 186 four bedroom houses that are under $300,000 within the Hamilton area. If you extend that search area to a 50km radius around Hamilton, there are 1,134 properties that meet that criteria.
It's not all doom and gloom

Good public transit in the cities is a bonus. There are ski hills, Bethany, Lakeridge. Plenty of fishing and boating. Lots of horsey stuff and it is a very arty farty area.
You could get your 4 bed house http://www.youronlineagents.com/onta...properties.php

OK, my little bit of Canada, I live 5 minutes out of Red Deer Alberta, which is halfway between Calgary and Edmonton. It's a decent sized place with all the amenities you could expect to find in a decent market town in the UK. The mountains are two and a half hours away, there's lots to do in the summer, not so much in the winter if you don't like winter sports. I again suggest you find a job or two before you start narrowing things down.
If you want mountain view for $290k, these are your choices for Alberta and BC http://www.realtor.ca/map.aspx#acr:f...e;chkAll:false

As others have said, if you are reliant on employment income to make this move I recommend that you research locations where the success of being employed for the long term is favourable and go from there

What a bloody awful thread this turned into....I intended to go to bed half an hour ago, and it's now turned into a 'poke a realtors website' and sit here and go, 'oh, how nice' etc! OP I hope this is giving you hopes and aspirations! BE regulars I hope you aren't all planning an East/West and vice versa hochie kockie (can't spell that, apologies). Quite seriously, Canada is bloody huge, you have to have something to hitch your star to, if it's work, that's a big deciding factor and you'd be far best to go where that's available. Best of luck.
