Could anyone tell me a bit about these places around Calgary and what the commute would be in to the city, also are they safe?

They are all in the geographic NE which most people advise to avoid.
IMHO your best bet of all those is Evanston.

I don't know the areas, but would it help to look at this site, with crime stats for each community for the last year? http://www.gov.calgary.ab.ca/police/facts/stats.html#A

Would not live in the NE if at all possible. Not that every area is bad, it is just that the NE is the main industrial area of Calgary, and the housing reflects that.
I would look at the newer estates in the NW, for example Tuscany. Nice area, safe and family orientated.

Good choice there mate, I'm heading for Tuscany and Mo is Heading for Arbour Lake (she couldnt pass the entrance exam for Tuscany )

On my latest expedition to find a quick way home, I happened to drive around the south and south west of Calgary....some of the housing projects actually looked fairly decent...maybe someone who lives around there may be able to help...The area I'm referring to was /is just off the deefoot, on the 22x.

Just to add the NE is rather dank, and full of east indians and orientals, so if you like a good mix of cultures, it could possibly be an area you may enjoy.

These days most neighbourhoods north of memorial have East Indians and\or Orientials. So if there prescence causes you problems stay away from the North!! Personally I hate Chinese (cuisine) but love Indian\thai\viet so I'm often glad to see them around (usually means the supermarkets will stock ingredients I'm looking for).

I think the areas you are refering to could be cranston\mackenzie (towne) New Brighton\Copperfield\evergreen\bridlewood\somerset . All nice areas I agree.

For anybody thats interested in such things, The 'Medics' are touting the idea that calgary is heading so far south so quickly There will be a new hospital built just south of 22x within the next 2 years.

Grimshaw is quite good you should try there easily in commuting distance of calgary
