Now awaits for the Monty Python comments on being a lumberjack

Yes Canada has a few trees that need cutting down in most Provinces.
BC has a huge timber industry and the wearing of red plaid shirts is not mandatory nor is growing a beard.

Bear in mind the work tends to be seasonal.

But the big money if you're an arborist is in urban areas. My son's best mate is so qualified and makes very good $$ doing stuff he happens to love. Arborists don't (just) cut trees down, they look after their health and preserve them when possible.

This may be less true of clear cutting in BC or wherever.

Perhaps. But since urban arborists all have big pickups, the common fall back plan is to slap a snow plough on the front and sign up lots of homeowner to $300 a season drive clearing contracts. Non refundable of course when there's very little snow that winter.

Ontario Parks employ arborists. So I suppose other provincial parks do to.

They lost money that year.

A better scam is to say you've invented a rain making machine and sell it to farmers. The deal is that if the annual rainfall is above average one year they pay a fee, but if its below average then no charge.

Think about it.

I worked for a company about 20 years ago in Vancouver called The Tree People. http://www.treepeople.ca/index.html Or you could try Davey Tree. http://www.davey.com/

Ring or email direct to the office you're interested in. I would think that if he has a visa already and they didn't need to sponsor him he would have much better luck.
