My Minister's Permit or extended stay Permit will expire on 18th January 2003. I am now trying to fill in forms of application from within Canada (new rule) I am told that it can take up to 40 days for a Police Certificate from UK. Can anyone tell me, if I have to wait until I get these Certificates, or can I send my application in part?

I have a friend with the same problem. If you find out anything, please post the answer to your question. Thanks

Hi, I live in Calgary Alberta. I contacted the immigration office in Calgary and they sent me the Application Kit. There is probably a local office where you live.
Good Luck to you.

I would be interested to know (linked question to the thread starter) whether you can actually apply for PR once you are in Canada on a temp visa (6 months stay)?

Unfortunately, it used to be five years of a Minister's Permit to allow you to apply for a PR. The change has been made allowing you to apply after 3 years of residency. So I doubt if 6 months visa would cut it however there is no harm in looking into things while you are in Canada.
Good luck.

it only took me a few weeks to get the police certificate from uk, really quick turnaround infact they must have processed it immediately as the turnaround time just about covered postage time... hope this helps

FYI I applied for PR while resident in canada on a work permit, it was processed through buffalo US. Took about 8 months in 1999.
Good luck
Iain
There is more information, and more expert advice likely if you post your question in the canadian immigration forum rather than the lifestyle forum.

Thank you for the information regarding the Police Certificates. Unfortunately my application was returned to me on Christmas Eve. They sent me a form to complete and returned my fee. I now have to have my signature countersigned by my doctor, Police Officer, Lawyer, or someone of equal standing, who has known me for at least one year. My Doctor is on vaction. A Police Officer or Lawyer are not an option. I tried my Bank Manager, only to be told that since September 11th they are no longer able to countersign for passports. Any suggestions please?

we had the padre sign ours, but any civil servant would do.
ours only took three week for local police certificate and national police certificate.

Thanks for your reply CJ, I will look into this. I have now been requested by the Canadian Government to have further medical test. Ah well another delay. I feel like an inadequate athlete.. in a race...full of unexpected hurdles.

Yes I know and I am worried. So now I don't know what the further tests are or how much I have to take to pay for these tests. The Doctor I used does not have direct Debit facilities so I was told to bring $250 in cash for the first medical he carried out...so I amd stuck, wondering and worrying...HURDLES
