Re: anyone use skype to eep in touch at home
We use Skype for almost all our calls back to the UK - unlimited calls to the UK are only $5 per month, but we don't normally spend more than $2-3!
To make it a bit easier, we've got one of these: Basically you plug in a normal phone (we're using a cordless) and you can then dial numbers using Skype - handy! Call quality and reliability is HIGHLY dependant on the speed and quality of your broadband connection - ours is great as we're downtown, but if you're outside of an urban centre, you might find it less than ideal! If cost is an issue, you can also get a free UK landline number that redirects to your computer from www.sipgate.co.uk (register whist you're in the UK!). Again, probably not as reliable as Vonage, but the price is right and if you've got a good internet connection it'll be fine. |

I've never looked at VOIP as I'm not sure my monitored alarm system would work with that... do you know? Anyone else here with an alarm and non-landline set-up?

Most of them (it seems) are powered by USB only which is good for trans-atlantic moves! |

It's not so much the way the alarm connects to the voip I believe - since the alarm wouldn't know that it's being connected to a voip system as it's just a phone jack socket and a normal number, I think it's more than the alarm company don't like people using voip in order to guarantee a service, as in theory, in an emergency, a traditional phone line would stay up longer than a voip one e.g. if the house was on fire....
