Oshawa is the GTA's most eastern urban community. It is a CITY, not a town.
City of Oshawa, Ontario has around 100,000 inhabitants. Its major employer
is GM (General Motors) of Canada, couple of thousands work at the Oshawa GM
plant. Besides GM, Oshawa has no major industry, mostly services and
retailers, like Wal-Mart, Bay, Sears, law offices and some government
offices. There are some manufacturing companies, but very few and quite
small, no more than 50 employees each. Most of Oshawa residents work either
at the GM plant or in Toronto or Greater Toronto Area (GTA). Except those
lucky to have a job at GM, the others must commute everyday, via car or GO
train, and Oshawa is located about 40 km east of Toronto. So, 80 km every
day. But if you find a job in the Toronto west-end, you should add another
30 km. And further east, towards Mississauga, Oakville, add another 20-30
km, between Oshawa, in the east, and Oakville in the west, there is around
100 km. All GTA!
Oshawa has a relatively cheaper real estate market, cheaper than Toronto and
way cheaper than Markham and Richmond Hill, but you MUST own a vehicle in
order to commute daily to work (outside Oshawa). And if you don't mind
spending hours (during rush hours) on 401 freeway, in and out of Toronto,
you should not have any problems living in Oshawa.
And other aspect, there are not many immigrants in Oshawa. While the line-up
for the health card is huge in Toronto (in Scarborough where I live,
Lawrence and Warden office, there is a 3+ hrs waiting time, and most of the
time you have to wait just outside the office, either summer or winter...),
in Oshawa you can do it in a matter of minutes. The Health Ministry is
located in a shopping mall at the intersection of King St. W and Stevenson
Rd. S. It took me just 20 minutes to renew my photo health card, but I was
in Oshawa on business, I don't think that anybody would drive 80 km back and
forth just to renew a health card.
And lastly, Oshawa is a quite community, no, or very low, crime rate. Very
good to raise your kids over there.
I have been in Oshawa over 20 times in the past 10 years, so I can speak
from my own experience.
Hope this helps.
Good luck.

Hi Chris!
Thanks a lot for so many informations about Oshawa.
I applied for PR in Canada and if I get my visa I will
move to Oshawa. My uncle has a house over there so that's
why this city is going to be my destination after landing.
Then it will depend on my and my husband's job.
I hope, I will like Oshawa to.
Thanks again.
