Have not tried it, or even listened to the ad, but this is it.

My business partner, who spends four or five months a year in Mexico, uses it for hours a day to keep in touch with his Canadian and US customers. He pays a few tens of dollars a year and reckons he saves hundreds, even thousands, of dollars a year in long distance charges.

I think I may be bringing one with me! I use an Internet and telephone provider in Paris, have for years, as they have been great. When I told them we we coming to Canada, they sent me a box...which means I can then keep my French telephone number in Canada as a second line, and it gives me free calls to France and another country of my choice. I plug it into my modem. They said it was like a telephone box. I am paying 7 euros a month for it, it seemed like a good idea, but I haven't tried it yet.

Wasn't there a thread before where a few people thought it unreliable and not a clear line?

Hmmmm....our understanding of it is you pay an annual fee and that's it. Our concern is that somebody has pointed out that people making calls to us will be charged long distance if we're using a Magic Jack. Anyone know if this is the case please?

So, it plugs into your computer and uses your wireless? and you have to pay for it?
Why not use Skype? it's free, or are we all assuming the person on the other end doesn't have a computer?

Just use Frongo, Dell Voice or GrooveIP on your phone

It's cheap if you want to call a regular phone at the other end. $20 a YEAR.

I looked into an alternative to my phone company and came up with Magic Jack, NetTalk Duo and Ooma. I ended up buying the Ooma telo and it works great. At the time MagicJack didn't offer to port my land line number so I dismissed it.

I live in UK and have a MagicJack with a local Canadian number. It costs me $25 per year and I have not had any issues with it. I have the "old" one, so it has to be plugged into my computer, and the computer needs to be on for me to receive a call. The new one apparently can be plugged into the modem and will work without your computer on (this is much more desirable obviously).
The benefits are really that my friends and family can call me on a "local" number without pre-planning when we're going to talk. The line quality has been fine (better than SKYPE) and has been reliable. I like that my voicemail is sent to my emails if I miss a call and I can listen to them from my smart phone.

Forgive me for being a techno twonk but you say you live in the UK. So, if we have one in Canada, what would our English family/friends have to pay to call us in Canada?
