If anyone's looking for a really nice DVD player, I'd recommend this one:

and you can make it multi-region. There are several suppliers in Canada.

Try the Brick. Ours from there works perfectly and cost about $45. Kaco DV X-721. Cheap, cheerful and a good choice.

I bought an RCA upconverting HDMI dvd player from Walmart back in Jan 07 for around $90. This player also came with HDMI cables which surprisingly enough are not always supplied.

I then went to this website to unblock it so I could play region-free (region code 0).

Check out your local stores. Write down the exact model names for sale then check out the hack code website to see if there is a code available before you buy. You should also check out the remote controls as the buttons on some of these are so miniscule they are difficult to use :eek:

It sounds like the DVD player is not a Canadian one. If it is a British player it will not work as the signals are different.

As far as I know you cannot get a multi-region player, that is a DVD player that will work in the UK and in Canada.

The best you can do is as this thread is saying, get a Canadian player that can be set to play DVD's from other regions.

Before coming here I transferred all the vidoe's that were not protected to DVD then gave the video's to a local charity shop.

Not worth puting them on ebay, I found them virtually worthless.

The only thing preventing my DVD player from working in Canada is that it's fixed 240V-only. I'm sure someone must make a multiregion player that's 100-240V; in fact, I'm surprised most aren't because that would allow them to sell the same model everywhere and save money.

Mine was dual voltage, a Wharfedale sold exclusively by Tesco ages ago. I know it was PAL/NTSC because it said so, as did the select on-screen menu, but for some reason it let the telly do the PAL converting on R1s in the UK and I never got anything except black and white here in Canada on it :confused:

Sure, you need one that does PAL to NTSC conversion as well. Mine does that, but won't work on the mains in an NTSC country!

ah but my sister has a little postable multi region player. which is canadian. and it does the same thing.

so im sure you need a tv that accepts the two different types of input to work, unless your dvd actually converts the signal too.

I still enjoy watching VHS movies. Firstly because I can stop the tape halfway through and watch the rest the next day without having to go through all the DVD menu and secondly it's great to be able to pick up some great movie titles on VHS at silly prices.

Its to do with the update time of the TV screen, its different in the UK to North America, hence the harware cannot interchange. So getting a power adaptor is a waste of time.

Followed a couple of tips after posting last night, got a cheap as chips DVD player from Future shop Lethbridge ($35 brand= MAX) anyways works fine on sons tv (which was also as cheap as chips) but not on our Sony Bravia!!!!........appears black and white and in wrong screen size. Could be TV settings of course, I shall investigate!!!!!!!

Could be something as simple as turning the plug over if it is only a two prong one.

We have an LG brand DVD player with just a two prong plug and if I happen to plug it in the "wrong way" it gives me a black and white picture with diagonal cross hatching turning the plug over fixed the problem. That's on an older Sony XBR. :confused:;):D

My UK player was region-free/dual voltage/pal and NTSC compatible but I couldn't get it to work here as I should have changed the settings from PAL to NTSC while in the UK and NOT when in Canada - as the screen rolled 100mph and I couldn't read the onscreen instructions to select the correct options.

It actually stated that in the manual but I didn't read it til in Canada. :curse:
