Is it the same for birds does anyone know? We are taking our parrots with us when we go and have been quoted £1200 from the pet relocation company :blink:

Thanks for the invite but I doubt my mum would look kindly if I moved back to Canada and went straight back for a British bloke... that may be the final step to a heart attack :rofl::eek:

Thanks for all of your posts, very helpful and I was coming to much the same conclusion as many of you have already done.
I was sorting it out with rabbies jab & pet passport/Defra certificate through vet (apt tommorow for jab) planning on booking flight afterwards tommorow with Air Canada.

And then today my mum and ex-fiance both throw me a guilt trip bone to gnaw on about how it may be better to leave my cat here with him..... so now I'm in the unenviable position of being damned if I do or dont from both mom and him... annoying to say the least! :sneaky::frown:

I would call Defra's helpline if I were you (local rate number on their website) as they were very quick and efficient answering my questions as to requirments of both countries and each different scenario (ie, if theres chance of coming back to UK what needs to be done to facilitate, and if its just one way for sure what is needed by both countries) not long hold times either.

If I were you I would be extra cautious as there is a worldwide press coverage on Avian flu internationally and you may have to jump through extra hoops that dog/cat owners wouldn't.... good luck! :)

I brought my dog back from Spain earlier this year. All they look at is the Rabies certificate. They charge some sort of an 'Inspection Fee' at the airport, I don't know what it is for, because they never inspected the dog. Just looked at the certificate, asked me to pay the fee and come back and pick up the dog.

It was quite painless.

i brought my dog over on 3rd oct and was $240 from uk to edmonton with airtansat as excess baggage just fit to fly letter wanted at airport and thats all they wanted to see we had rabies and other vacination done but they wasnt interested in them just the fit to fly letter,,

I used PetAir to send my dog over, he arrived last Tuesday, altough it should have been Monday. Air Canada changed the times of their internal flights so Archie (my dog) got to stay in a kennels Calgary for 24 hours before he arrived in Regina Sask. Wasn't amused, but the airlines admited it was their fault and paid for his accommodation etc and he arrive da day late in very good condition minus his duty free :)

Hi I brought my 2 dogs over 25 Oct. via air transat as excess baggage. We used a pet passport this has been wonderful for us we have all ready been to the USA twice with the dogs with out any problems at all they new at vancouver exactly what they were and asked for them. It was brill.

Tried with Air Transat but either they are having a website issue or every single flight from Manchester to Montreal is full until Dec 1st :blink:

Had a nice little row with him last night as I decided to bring her with me as atleast then I'm not losing everything I love here in the UK.... didn't go down well as apparently its selfish of me. Today's the day for her rabbies jab this PM so we'll see how it goes :sneaky:

I have just booked my 2 dogs on a flight with me next week on Air Canada.
Cost was £245 for both.and they travel as excess baggage.Found Air Canada very helpful.They are the ones who suggested excess baggage as cargo was going to be about £1000.
They have only had to have rabies shots and fit to travel letter.So cats are probably the same.

I dont understand airlines:curse: AC led me to believe that after the 1st November they no longer flew pets as excess baggage because it was too cold! So what is going on here...what route are you flying.

its a different division of AC (Air Canada) that deals with animal transport now so you need to contact Air Canada Cargo (Air Canada Cargo/Live to be more specific) to get pets transported, basically they deal with all the freight/animal/produce etc etc cargo on flights which is seperate to passanger (human) travel. There should be a link on Air Canada's 'info' or FAQ page to Air Canada cargo page... good luck!
