Any tips from old-timers
Heya guys.
Thought this would be an interesting thread, not just for me who just got here, but for folks coming over soon, give them some ideas too.
What tips would you give to peepz like me who just landed. OK, i have a canadian wife who'se used to all this, however, she too has also been away 2 years so things change.
What are the things to look for in terms of property rental, job searching, socialising, where to buy food, things like this. Also, would be great to get advise from all in different provinces, just coz ya land in one place, dont mean youll be there forever huh.
Would be nice to know of youz guys experiences, and all bounce off each other, making landing easier for peepz as we progress through the thread.
I'll even kick this one off
Ottawa, Ontario.
If yer gonna rent, make sure heating is in the rental, as here heating bills are paid all year round, so you dont get loads of huge bills in winter and none in summer, making it a financial strain in winter...This is Canada people, yer average one gas bar heater aint gonna cut it
Most places i seen so far rent out places with heat included AND they pay electric on the fridge and stove, we just pay hydro (thats electric bill-uk equivelent) and water. Water can also be a pitfall. 3 bills here, cold water, hot water (more hydro), and waste water (toilets, sinks). Make sure you know what water bills yer paying....
Ok, theres mine, what can you guys fill us newbies in on.
Cheers guys

The big surprise in Calgary is that your household gas bill goes up and down in line with the price of oil.
Enmax is the city owned utility ... we have fixed price contracts with them for both gas & electricity, and pay for water, sewage, garbage collection, etc through them ... the bill is around $200 in summer, $400 in winter ... the big difference is the cost of heating.
Epcor is the Edmonton based equivalent of Enmax ... they also operate in Calgary, but if you use them, the profits go to Edmonton.
Atco are the local household gas supplier ... they were recently bought by British Gas.
