Missy mum, I'm not sure where you live now, what the local population is and why you might wish to move to Vernon but certain things obviously need to be considered. The same applies to Aqua really- he came from Ottowa- huge population with probably a reasonable expat population to Vernon- a lot smaller- population of around 50k which clearly doesn't . Yes- Kelowna isn't far with some expats there and Penticton if you fancy some boatin' and huntin' with Jossie ;) in Penticton but we are more scattered. It partly depends on what you do- we encounter a lot of Canadians, and other nationalities at work and so socialise to some degree with them. Maybe we are unsociable and not gregarious and just enjoy ourselves without dependence on fellow expats. That isn't to say we don't want to meet up with our British buddies, it is fun when we do but it isn't crucial. A trip down the road and a meetup at a pub by the Okanagan in Kelowna may well an idea. I was thinking, TiryTory I reckon lives in a similar sized town what do you feel TT?

You called? ;)

There are tons of Brits around where we live but we don't socialise with them. Exchange pleasantries etc but nothing more. I have been lucky enough to move to a small community where we have been welcomed, mostly by Canadians and a few German citizens too (second generation). Some have been through work, others through kids activities. It's nice to reminisce or have a vague moan sometimes but I usually FB messages for that with other Brits abroad. I feel like to truly call somewhere home I need to look forwards not backwards and I feel like trying to be friends with Brits is like not trying to fit in. My take anyway.

Thank you for all your replies and Aqua, I will definitely let you know when we head that way. Tirytory, I understand what you are saying and I agree with you, but I have now given up trying to assimilate. I don’t know if they do not understand my sense of humour or what and I am still searching for theirs! Everyone is very friendly and ‘hi, how are you’, but that’s as far as it goes. I have many friends of all different nationalities, but here they don’t seem to have time for anyone else. I have come to the conclusion that this is how it will be and that is what led me to search for other Brits in the hope that I can meet someone who would like to actually get to know me and not just pass pleasantries. I am in a very small town right now (3,000+) and neither my husband nor I like the city, so Vernon is definitely the size I am looking for. Brits or no Brits, I think I just need to be in a bigger town.

Ooh 3000 is small, mine is 15000. I think I also got lucky :)
