From what you said yesterday I think they were a bit premature with all the tests. This caring nurse (OH rolling round floor laughing) would just check it for a few weeks, not scare someone by sending them for a barrage of tests and raising their BP more.

A decent GP would likely have done the same. I have a feeling that the decent GPs here don't work in walk-in clinics.

Hate having my Bp taken by those automatic gizmos. They always Squash my arm and leave a bruise. They also read high. I actually have reasonably low bp _ around 105 over 65. When they turnaround and say 130 over 85 that's fine, I want to Scream!

My doctor a long time ago told me not to trust them. They are notoriously inaccurate so may provide a false sense of security or, on the other hand, get people needlessly upset.

Some here may recall many years ago those weight scales which for a halfpenny would spit out a ticket with your weight. They weren't any good either.

we use in icu arterial bp measurements which is very invasive, but when the alarm sounds we always manually check the machines just to make sure. I believe that the old fashioned listening method is no longer taught to new nurses which is scary.

Can't believe they don't teach it any more. The only way you can be sure something is right is if you do it yourself.

It's a basic skill, why do they think it's not needed anymore?

here in scotland, our nurses and most other health professionals are still taught how to take a bp manually. Basic skill i would have thought.

The only time Ihave mine done "properly" is by my GP. The nurse, nurse practitioner and all the health care auxiliaries When I was in hospital used those damn machines. luckily the nurse for my Canada medical did it properly with a nice low reading!

Some interesting comments there. I'd been toying with the idea of buying one of those things for my own piece of mind. It now sounds like it would do more harm than good.

I was very surprised at the gizmo reading a couple of days back (170/114). How can your blood pressure go up significantly after ten days on medication?

I was sufficiently surprised that I mentioned it to the doctor when he came in. He did it again the old fashioned way (145/85). Quite a difference.

There seems to be little rhyme or reason to that one. Our diet is pretty healthy by any standards. If anything, she eats more cholesterol-laden crap than I do. And she smokes. Odds are it's mainly a result of family history and beer.
