Default Another unfair situation in Canada

Someone was complaining in another thread about the fact that people from other countries can exchange their driver's licence for a Canadian one, but Brits cannot!

Just in case anyone is interested - there is another very unfair situation, this time it can be blamed on the British government.

Did you know that if you pay income tax in England and then emigrate to Canada, when you get to be 60 for women (they are changing this to 65) or 65 for men you can apply to the UK government and get a pension based on the amount of your contribution when you worked in England.

However, once you get your pension - it NEVER increases if you live in Canada, South Africa, Australia and I believe, New Zealand. If you emigrate to the States or Spain or loads of other places, your pension increases at the same time as it does in England!

People have been petitioning the UK government for years and years. Last year a SA lady sued the government and lost becuase they said it was a matter for the legislature and not the courts.

Most Canadians think that the reason the UK government wont provide increases to us is becuase more people emigrate to Canada, Australia, NZ and SA than anywhere else - its just a ruse to save money, although apparently it wouldn't cost all that much in the big scheme of things.

It might not be a big hardship for some people, but there are apparently single ladies living in abject poverty because they retired 15-20 years ago and are now trying to live on a pension that has not increased since then!

I read about that recently, I think it was last year or the year before that they took it to court but lost.

It's another recipricol thing. They increase it in the US because there is a recipricol agreement etc but in Canada I think there is not so it's another case of who will be the first side to give in and do it so the other does it too.
