Thiking of working or emmigrating to Canada.
Have DipHE, ITU course, Teaching and Assessing, and have recently done ALS course. I am a G Grade Night Sister with 18 years ITU experience, being a Sister for 14 of those years.
I am hoping to go to Ontario and would be grateful for any advice/information about nursing in Canada. I already have the forms to register in Ontario. Is it right you only have two weeks holiday a year? What are the working conditions like, chances of further study, the hours etc? Is it true that there is a shortage?
Is it better to work for an Agency? Where is the best place to look for jobs or should I write to different hospitals and ask about vacancies?
Sorry about posting on this forum. You regulars must get fed up with the immigration/future work thing but I've had this on the 'nursing' forum and not received any answers yet. It would not be worth putting it in the immigration site as I need to talk to nurses already in Canada or who have had experience of working there in the past.

Hi Balesy,
Just a quickie message. Have you thought about directing your questions to the college of nurses in Ontario directly. This might be your best bet.
Do not e-mail though, i'd be gob-smacked if you got a reply. Telephone directly, and be persistent! They love to refer you to an answermachine, and never return calls. Having said that, keep calling and getting names, eventually they do. Besides you might be lucky.
If you'd like i'd could always get you a few telephone numbers of local hospitals, and you could speak with human resources directly as well.
Getting it straight from the horses mouth then so to speak.
I'm in South west Ontario though, so this might not be the area your looking for.
Wish I could help you more, but then I'm sure you know my predicament. If there anything I can do though, feel free.
I thought there were a few more nurses here, hopefully they'll reply with a little bit more in-house information.
Sorry, that's the best I can do. All the best though.

Research the web site of the licensing body for nurses in Ontario which is the “College of Nurses of Ontario:
http://www.cno.org/
Check out the section “Registration Guide for Internationally Educated Nurses.
Also the “Nurses’ Association of Ontario is the trade union representing nurses in Ontario:
http://www.ona.org/aboutus/index.html
Also, check out their FAQ section for lots of information – see the section about foreign nurses wanting to come and work in Ontario.
I also wanted to remind you to post some of those photos that you took on your recent trip to Ontario – especially the ones taken around Niagara Falls.
