I don't pretend Canada has a civilised society.

I don't think it's professional to go so far away that you can't pick up email. I fired someone once who didn't answer his phone because he was on vacation and another who didn't answer because he was driving. I think that, if a firm's going to pay someone, they've a right to expect a reasonable degree of commitment; if one immigrant won't give that, then there's always another who will. Some are grateful even to have a hand held email device.

You fired somebody for not answering the phone while driving????

Yes. He said he was in some State where it was illegal to answer the phone while driving, an argument that might have carried some weight except that he knew we pay the fines. It would have been no loss to him to do the professional thing.

Of course he fired them. You think dbd would really just go onto the internet and post lies and half truths?

Heh! All literally true, hon. Not always the whole truth, admittedly, but the point here is that, as an employer, I can dump people whimsically; it's not like the UK where there are standards and procedures.

Since you mention it, please quote a post where you know me to have lied.

Don't forget the dreaded seniority, which means that the people who have worked there longer than you get first choice of which weeks to take.

Hmmm had that in the UK - worked in local government for 15 years and that's how it always worked ;)

Really? I had never heard of it before. At my work some people have been there 20 years and still dont get their choice of vacation days.

Edit, I did work at a few hospitals where people with kids were given first shout for school vacation times, bloody ridiculous.

I have worked places were people with kids get first choice, seniority gets second choice and I got whatever was left :(

Always had a minimum of 3 weeks in Ontario with option to carry over unused vacation days into next year.

When I was in public sector I started off on 4 weeks, but with carry-overs etc I soon started each year with a 5 week balance.

Having lived in Canada for past 13 years, I've forgotten how good it is in Europe. Still amazed how many times I've emailed my brother in UK at his work email, only to get an 'Out of Office on Holiday' auto notification.

Believe it, or not, we are a kind and generous firm for our industry. We have a good number of refugees from real sweatshops; including the man behind me who was fired from a large Canadian computer company for having a heart attack (and it wasn't even on company time).

I think it's acceptable to treat human resources in Canada as one might battery hens. People moving from countries with regulations governing working practises such as dismissal and Health and Safety to Canada on only a work permit might want to be a bit cautious about it.

I didn't ask for the coins back after he couldn't spend them! Collectors' items, they'll be.
