Thanks for all your suggestions guys, I'll now have to do a bit of internet research on the areas you mentioned and check out the Wiki thread.
French Schools aren't an issue for us luckily nor is daily commuting into Montreal, but we just didn't want to totally immerse ourselves into a 100% french language community nor for that matter into the reverse! Cheers Ray If work is likely to be located at the west end of Montreal, or in the city centre, commuting from Ottawa is not out of the question. I was talking to a guy today who commutes, by train, from Ottawa to his office in downtown Mtl. You'd need to do a travel time/travel cost/property price analysis. |

Re: Anglo Areas in Quebec
There seem to be pockets of anglos everywhere. My daughter (a francophone) is currently living in a house near the stadium in which she's the only person who speaks French.

If you have even more time and want to live in Ontario, but work in Montreal, South Lancaster, Ont...has some lovely homes right on the St. Lawrence River (it is called Lake St. Francis there as it is so wide).
Remember, if you have kids, they will go to french school, unless you or your spouse went to english school in Canada. Or there is the private school route. Once children reach 16, the English school system (CEGEP) is open to them. Bear in mind that many schools in the French system may offer special assistance to new pupils who are not French speaking. |
Re: Anglo Areas in Quebec
If your fear is living in an area where you won't be understood, don't worry. Montreal is completely bilingual and virtually everyone (mostly businesses) who detect that French is not your first language will immediately revert to English, whether you like it or not. God knows I tried to speak French.
I studied at McGill for a while (granted, very anglo and right in the middle of Montreal!) and delib. lived in the Plateau area, one reason being that everyone told me it was a very francophone area and I wanted to immerse myself in the language. I only encountered one person who did not speak a word of English. Everyone else including the homeless people begging for change and the occasional drug addict openly begging for money to buy drugs were impressively fluent. Its quite impressive when even the homeless are bilingual.

Hi All
My wife and I are seriously considering moving to Quebec from the UK and whilst we both can speak reasonable French, we wonder if there are any areas/towns/villages within say 50 miles of Montreal, which are a bit more "anglo"? We also enjoy the outdoor lifestyle so proximity to lakes, mountains, golf etc would be a bonus. Cheers Ray |
Re: Anglo Areas in Quebec
hi, yes i ditto everything DENG said. It is a very bilingual city. People just automatically switch from one language to another. It is great watching my kids speak so fluently in both languages without so much of a hint of an accent in either language.
Anyway, I am curious as to why you want to live in Quebec but dont want integrate into the culture? If you dont want to be with francophones why not choose another province? Please dont worry about not intergrating here. Just the fact that you speak English is a huge bonus compared to so many of those arriving from other countries that cannot speak either language. I wish you the best! |
