Default Am i dong something wrong?

I am eligible for a skilled work visa to both Canada and Australia so knowing my trade is needed I decided to start to email different companies in the look out for a possible job offer/sponsership.

I have emailed Companies who are advertising for Mechanics with either my C.V and a strong reference or a polite email asking if they are considering employing from the U.K.

I have also emailed main dealerships in both auz and canada to see if they will be recruiting in due course .

I would say all in all I have sent around 70 emails and I have had two responses from Agencies in the U.K.

I am 36 yrs old , I thought maybe this would put people off?....but in some emails I havnt even discolosed my age!

I am using the email account hotmail and have been told their emails do tend to be delayed but it has been a week since I started to email!!

Feeling quite dis heartend at the mo, If I apply for jobs in the U.K and they have been taken 9 times out of 10 I get a response to apologise and say the position has been filled.

Am I going about this the wrong way? Or are there little jobs at this time? As my job is on the (quite short) list for Canada for instance I find this hard to believe.

I have also posted in the "jobs wanted" section of this site but had no emails.

Any advice is definetly welcome!

Speaking from the Canadian perspective, you are going about it the wrong way.

Many on here will tell you that it is acceptable for Canadian employers to fail to respond as that is the way it's done over here. I don't agree, but that is another debate for another day.

You need to call people or, preferably, meet them face to face. One is going to be much easier from the UK than the other.

Best of luck

Short answer - yes.

Slightly longer answer - don't email, pick up the phone at the very least, or ideally get yourself over to Canada and job hunt in person. Emails will get ignored, it's all about personal contact.

Even longer answer - read all of the Wiki pages on Job Hunting in Canada to understand how different the hiring culture generally is over there.

And presumably you are aware that if your job is on the eligible occupations list for FSW cat 1, you don't need a job offer for a visa? You'll find that most employers would be much more willing to consider you once you've actually got PR and are work authorised, as they may just not be prepared to go through the paperwork/hassle/wait of hiring you.

Lastly, I'm not sure how long you've been job hunting, but we have forum members who have been searching for a year or two before success, so don't give up. Keep trying, but just phone rather than email maybe!

HTH, good luck.

The wiki section is here http://britishexpats.com/wiki/Catego...Hunting-Canada.

Age is not a problem though you would not usually put your age on a Canadian resume. How a Canadian resume differs from a British CV is also covered in the wiki.

The best way to get a job is to visit the area where you would like to live and go and visit local dealerships. Look out for a poster called Piff Poff whose husband did this. She has been generous in sharing her experience with others.

And if you do have to contact someone by e-mail, never use a hotmail account.

Many professional's email systems automatically consign hotmail users to the junk/spam folder.
