How can you claim that it's better in canada if you don't live there,, also how can you know all of the UK. I was chatting to someone today in Montreal who got chased down the highway by a guy with a baseball bat recently. Seriously I also think it's because Canada is never in the UK news, thats why we all have this idea it's a crime free utopia. Well in most of the 'parks' they dont even have swings etc... well did have but have been vandalised... but like the whole of the world some areas are ok some are not. I dont for one min think Canada is this perfect place with no crime!! There is no where on earth like that... there are awful people in every country. |

You know, Canada isn't perfect, but one of the 'values' a lot of Canadians have here is respect for people non dependant on class, money, race.
Most people here are fairly nice. There are one or two idiots, but for the most part there is mutual respect here. Everyone understands the need to get along with each other. From what I remember of the UK, there is a whole sub-culture of disrespect in much of the youth. The youth in all classes are taught to disrespect everyone and everything because of having money, or having no money, class or no class etc. |

Maybe it's like I said in an earlier post because Canadian's have a much more family orientated life then the respect for others and their property is a more natural and acceptable thing. In th Uk it is probably seen as being un cool and kids get alot of peer pressure for being a respectful dork ! |

Just been back to Blighty as it goes, and all I saw was the same old stuff that was there when I last lived there; more visible minorities down South I guess, but oddly enough there was less traffic than I remembered. Nothing has changed really except people's ability to visit other countries and/or get itchy feet. The beer up North is way more pricey than I recalled too. I was walking around dodgy parts of London at night on occasion, I didn't feel unsafe as a person, just unsafe as a woman - I feel that here in some parts of town and downtown. In your face little sods don't bother me much...maybe because I was one because I had to be where I grew up. The Daily Mail and it's ilk is having a laaarf at everyone's expense with it's sensational type of jingoism. It was great to meet up with two separate would be emigrants and one returnee family....so interesting to watch the would-be's re-evaluate their decisions after a few  and some hometruths from the returnees. Still, it was a very therapeutic visit and gave me a new appreciation of what is important in life and what I have, wherever I am going to be in the world. I loaded up on Ariel, so I am a very happy laundry bunny for twelve months or so. Waggons East for me now....a new job and life beckon. |

All I can say is after living her eI don't feel any safer in Montreal than I did in London. I don't think any of them are particularly dangerous. The way some people are talking about the UK you would think its more dangerous than Bogota Jonathan |
Re: Almost another Jamie Bulger
A ridiculous overstatement and shame on you for using Jamie Bulgers name in comparison.

Do you know what happened to Jamie Bulger ? If so you'd know there are a lot of similarites , the KEY one being a very small child being horrendously attacked by another "child" ..thats what horrified Britons most and if you also read http://uk.news.yahoo.com/26082006/32...ck-attack.html You'll note at the bottom of the report mentioning on the Bulger case. Here as well http://www.guardian.co.uk/crime/arti...859712,00.html The fact that you don't recognise the similarities is your problem ..so no shame not me |

Seriously I also think it's because Canada is never in the UK news, thats why we all have this idea it's a crime free utopia. I think BC has huge problems, personally that the govt are in denial about, ie drugs, guns etc, but its just hidden here. Its certainly not crime free, but i guess because life is easier and the crime is not in your face, ie smashed up bus stops/telephone boxes, you feel its safer. I think sarahs point was valid though, as i recently met a Canadain friend in the park with our kids. We stayed all day and left bags, toys etc , no one touched them! I would not have done that in Yorkshire or London where I lived. But eh, I am a criminal defence lawyer, so maybe i have defended too many scrotts! |
